The Cava Chon might be the Cutest Dog you Ever Own

The Cavachon is not a purebred dog, but don’t let that fool you because this breed of dog is every bit as unique and special as the top award winners. A cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise, the Cavachon is known for expressive eyes and a sporty appearance. With a bright smile and intelligent manner, the Cavachon enjoys all types of activities, indoor or out. They are not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but the Cavachon might be the cutest dog you ever own, possibly even cuter than some of our Yorkies for sale, but its a tough call.

The Basics

Referred to as designer dogs by many, the Cava chon is a smart, unique little companion. They are alert, sturdy and lively dogs that are family-friendly, perfect for homes with older children, other pets or even senior citizens. Weighing in at around 15-35 pounds as an adult, the Cavachon is the perfect size for traveling, sightseeing and any other activity where they are able to be by your side. Their coat is medium length, smooth in texture and requires daily grooming. However, it is possible to keep the coat shorter, eliminating the daily need for brushing. Life expectancy of a well-cared for Cavachon ranges from 8 to 12 years.

Temperament

Nothing is as welcoming as a Cavachon wishing to give you kisses and play. Known as extremely social little dogs, they rarely see a person they don’t want to meet-immediately. In fact, the Cavachon can be a bit pushy when it comes to getting the attention they need and it’s sometimes necessary to reinforce manners at an early age. Nevertheless, they are delightfully cool, calm and collected and make great companions. They might appear fragile at first, but look out, because most Cavachons are quite sporty and high spirited. They enjoy all kinds of physical activity, indoors or out, including chasing birds, butterflies, or rolled up socks.

Appearance

The face of a Cavachon makes even the roughest of us want to pick him up and squeeze. With expressive round eyes that can melt you faster than a summer day, the Cavachon is well aware of his cuteness and often uses it against you. Rarely seen without a smile, the Cavachon has the unique ability to brighten the dullest of days with its bright, cheery demeanor and fluffy little paws. One tilt of the head and you may be lost forever in the world of the Cavachon.

Color combinations are quite eye catching, ranging from black and tan, buff and white, peach, sable and white and even tri-colored mixes. They shed very little, meaning that a Cavachon may be an appropriate choice even for people suffering from allergies.

If you’re looking for a breed of dog that will always bring you joy, humor and a little excitement, the Cavachon is a great choice. As a smaller dog, they are easy to maintain, can entertain themselves both indoors and out, and love attention and companionship of others. Known for their intelligent manner and playful demeanor, the Cavachon may just be the cutest dog you ever own. If you don’t think so, take a look at the Yorkie puppies for sale or Maltese for sale that we have in our selection.

How did the King Charles Spaniel Become Cavalier?

How did the King Charles Spaniel Become Cavalier?

Highly affectionate, playful and eager to please, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has an interesting history, marked by royalty, change and an intense desire to create the perfect Spaniel. As a result of the unique similarities between breeds, it is not uncommon for people to mistakenly confuse the Cavalier with its cousin the King Charles Spaniel. Nevertheless, the Cavalier has earned its reputation with dog lovers worldwide, ranking 25th in popularity in the United States and 6th in the United Kingdom.

The Beginning

In the 16th century, English nobility was partial to a small type of dog resembling a Spaniel. In addition to keeping ladies warm on carriage rides, the dogs were believed to have medicinal powers. Charles II was rarely seen without his “little dogs” and it is his passion for the animal that led to the “King Charles” name. During the early 19th century, the King Charles was interbred with the pug, a flat nosed dog, dramatically changing the features of the breed. This new dog is recognized as the modern day King Charles Spaniel.

During the 20th century, there were several attempts to restore lines of King Charles Spaniels to the breed of Charles II’s time. While some were unsuccessful, one resulted in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier is a bit larger than the standard King Charles with a flat head and a longer nose. In 1928, the first Cavalier club was formed, and The Kennel Club recognized the breed as “King Charles Spaniels, Cavalier type”. However, it wasn’t until 1945 that the Kennel Club recognized the breed in its own right as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel entered the United States from the United Kingdom in 1956. In 1994, the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was created.

Description

As one of the largest of the toy breeds (larger than most of the Yorkies for sale here at Affordable Pups), the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel typically weighs somewhere between 12 and 18 pounds with a height between 12 and 14 inches. With a silky coat of moderate length and a docked tail, the Cavalier is uniquely different from the King Charles Spaniel, who is typically smaller with a domed shaped head. The Cavalier has a longer muzzle, a flat head and ears that are set higher. Nevertheless, people often confuse the two.

There are four recognized colors of the Cavalier. The first is called the Blenheim and is characterized by chestnut markings on an otherwise pearly white coat. The second type is mostly black with tan highlights, referred to as “King Charles” color. A Cavalier who is entirely chestnut in color is referred to as “ruby”. The final color is tricolor, black and white with tan markings and referred to as “Prince Charles” in color.

With a rich, colorful history, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a favorite among many families. Revered for its beautiful colored coat and playful demeanor, the Cavalier is a welcome addition to almost any family looking for a friend, companion and playmate. Browse our website and find a selection of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Yorkies for sale, perhaps even an English Bulldog for sale.

Maltipoms give you the Best of Both Breeds

Maltipoms give you the Best of Both Breeds

A popular hybrid breed, the Maltipom, also called the Pomanese or Pomanees, is a combination of the Maltese and the Pomeranian breeds. As they are not purebred dogs, the breed is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC). Pulling behavioral characteristics and physical traits from both parent breeds, the Maltipom is a little dog, with long flowing hair known for its quick, fiery attitude and gregarious nature. Very small in size, the average Maltipom is less than 10 pounds with an expressive face and an alertness that can only be compared to a fox.

The Best Combination

With any hybrid dog, it is common to get a mixture of both physical and personality traits that are characteristic of the parents. For the Maltipom, this is just terrific because the combination results in a highly intelligent, feisty little dog that holds his head high and can get along with just about anyone. This high spirited, playful attitude combined with the soft Maltese-like coat is simply one of a kind.

Physical

As for physical traits, the Maltipom is lucky once again. With the same beauty you see in the pure Maltese for sale here at Affordable Pups, the Maltipom is a splendid looking dog. Some have small muzzles like the Pomeranian, while others have a longer muzzle like the Maltese. The eyes are almost always dark and very round and the ears hang down, but are set high up on the head.

The Maltipom also enjoys a lovely shiny coat of hair that tends to part down the center like the Maltese. On account of the Pomeranian influence, the colors are varied including white, black, orange, red and even cream. They may be solid or patterned, but always result in a long, flowing, beautifully colored coat. Remember, the Maltipom coat continues to grow like human hair even after it is trimmed. If you are not interested in maintaining it long, it is possible to cut the hair shorter to avoid frequent grooming.

Personality

The easy going, intelligent nature of the Maltese is paired perfectly with the territorial, cautious nature of the Pomeranian. The result- a gregarious, fun loving dog that happily welcomes others, but is loyal and faithful to his own family. In other words, the Maltipom can be social and fearless but knows where to draw the line.

The quick spirit and high energy of the Maltipom is certainly a combination of both parents, as they are two of the most spirited breeds available. The Maltipom enjoys learning new tricks and showing off to family and friends is an absolute pleasure. It is no surprise that the Maltipom is fiery, inquisitive and full of energy.

The regal attitude of the Pomeranian paired with the playfulness of the Maltese creates a combination of pure delight. With Pomeranian and Maltese ancestry and family history, the Maltipom is a terrific little high spirited playmate that enjoys spending time with his family. Perfect for traveling or staying home and doing tricks, the beauty and elegance of the Maltipom can’t be beat.

A Yorkie is a Great Companion for Grandma

A Yorkie is a Great Companion for Grandma

Dogs make great companions for seniors, particularly those that are easy going, easy to maintain and ready to provide an endless supply of unconditional love. One of the best breeds for meeting these standards is the Yorkshire terrier. As a small, lightweight, easy to care for pet that will show tons and tons of affection, a Yorkie is a great companion for Grandma.

Low Maintenance

One of the most important considerations to keep in mind when looking for a great companion for grandma is the amount of work she will be required to put in to properly maintain and care for her new friend. In other words, will she be able to perform the tasks necessary for ensuring basic care?

Any pet, even birds, require food and water and daily exercise. The Yorkies for sale here at Affordable Pups are just about the easiest dogs to maintain. On account of their size, they don’t require much in the way of food and grandma can quite easily handle the task of filling a small bowl with food and changing out a water dish.

Daily exercise can actually be accomplished in a couple of different ways. If grandma feels up to it, she may decide to take a short walk outside with Yorkie by her side, or if she’d rather stay indoors, Yorkie is quite happy roaming the house. Of course, an occasional peek outside the door is good for Yorkie, and it’s probably not such a bad idea for grandma too.

As for grooming, the Yorkshire terrier sheds very little, meaning that an occasional brush by grandma serves as a special treat as opposed to a necessity. Besides, a trip to the doggie groomer while grandma visits her favorite hair salon would serve to clip nails, clean around the eyes and bathe Yorkie so grandma wouldn’t have the added task.

The Perfect Friend

One of the most gratifying experiences is sitting on the couch, lounging with a Yorkie on your lap. Lap dogs by nature, there’s nowhere else a Yorkshire Terrier would rather be than nestled in with Grandma as she knits, does crossword puzzles or plays along with her favorite game shows on television.

The Yorkie puppies for sale here at Affordable Pups are content to enjoy the comfort of indoors more than roaming free in the wilderness. As a result, grandma’s Yorkie will most likely not run away if he gets outside unattended. What’s more, he will do his “business” quickly and return home as fast as possible – perfect for grandma who probably wouldn’t enjoy trying to keep up with her dog if he were interested in chasing the neighborhood cat or a runaway ball rolling down the street.

In fact, the Yorkie makes the perfect friend for grandma because they never argue, talk back or get bored. The physical companionship, the mental stimulation and the happiness a Yorkie can provide to grandma is simply unparalleled.

If grandma is looking for the perfect companion, a Yorkshire terrier is a great choice. A super simple breed to care for, grandma will enjoy hours of unconditional love and friendship. Watch grandma build a bond with a Yorkie and you may have to compete for her attention yourself.

A History of the Havanese

Oct 17

A History of the Havanese

The Havanese is a relatively new breed to the American Kennel Club (AKC) although its unique history dates back to the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492. In fact, as the national dog of Cuba, the Havanese were most likely aboard the trade ships on route to Cuba in the sixteenth century. Probable descendants of the Bichon, the Havanese has grown into a terrific family friendly pet, offering unconditional love and affection for all.

The Cuban Influence

One of the defining characteristics of the Havanese is its silky textured coat. Interestingly, many people believe that the coat developed in such a way as to protect the little dog from the harmful, intense rays of the tropical Cuban sun. Once called the Havana Silk Dog, the Havanese coat can endure the tropical environment quite well. Even today, the Havanese is well known for its tolerance to heat on account of its insulating and protective coat.

The Havanese was a coveted dog in Cuba, often serving as gifts for the affluent and tokens of gratitude for special favors. Unfortunately, a 20th Century revolution forced many wealthy Cubans to flee, leaving their dogs behind. The unrest led to the total disappearance of the old bloodlines of the Havanese in Cuba, but there were a few dogs that were lucky enough to survive and were successfully smuggled out. Today, in addition to having Yorkies for sale, Affordable Pups also has many Havanese available.

Traveling Abroad

By the mid-eighteenth century, the Havanese was becoming popular in Europe, earning itself a reputation as a trendy little dog. In fact, it was not uncommon to see it in the many dog shows of the time, strutting and parading around like royalty. Over time, the flexibility of the dog allowed it to adapt once more to its more current position- that of family member, watchdog and playmate.

In 1974, a couple from Colorado purchased 6 pedigreed Havanese from 2 displaced Cuban families and another 6 from a gentleman living in Costa Rica. This early attempt to rebuild the Havanese may have prevented their extinction. Just five years later in 1979, the Havanese Club of America was founded. However, it wasn’t until 1991 that the UKC recognized the Havanese breed and 1996 before the AKC assigned the Havanese a place in its toy group.

2011

The Havanese has had a colorful past for sure, but that has not stopped the breed from picking up a few tricks here and there along the way. The endearing personality of the Havanese makes it a terrific house pet and an even better friend, much like the Yorkie puppies for sale here at Affordable Pups. However, be aware, because your Havanese is quite intelligent and can find a way to manipulate a situation if need be. Think it’s not possible? Think again because your little angel will find a way to open cupboards, find the cookies and empty the box, all while you’re brushing your teeth.

With a colorful past and a unique story, the sturdy little Havanese has earned a reputation as a high spirited, curious little dog that adores people and makes a great companion. Perfect as the family pet, the Havanese is highly adaptable to almost any environment, bringing joy to both young and old.
