A History of the Havanese

The Havanese is a relatively new breed to the American Kennel Club (AKC) although its unique history dates back to the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492. In fact, as the national dog of Cuba, the Havanese were most likely aboard the trade ships on route to Cuba in the sixteenth century. Probable descendants of the Bichon, the Havanese has grown into a terrific family friendly pet, offering unconditional love and affection for all.
The Cuban Influence
One of the defining characteristics of the Havanese is its silky textured coat. Interestingly, many people believe that the coat developed in such a way as to protect the little dog from the harmful, intense rays of the tropical Cuban sun. Once called the Havana Silk Dog, the Havanese coat can endure the tropical environment quite well. Even today, the Havanese is well known for its tolerance to heat on account of its insulating and protective coat.
The Havanese was a coveted dog in Cuba, often serving as gifts for the affluent and tokens of gratitude for special favors. Unfortunately, a 20th Century revolution forced many wealthy Cubans to flee, leaving their dogs behind. The unrest led to the total disappearance of the old bloodlines of the Havanese in Cuba, but there were a few dogs that were lucky enough to survive and were successfully smuggled out. Traveling Abroad
By the mid-eighteenth century, the Havanese was becoming popular in Europe, earning itself a reputation as a trendy little dog. In fact, it was not uncommon to see it in the many dog shows of the time, strutting and parading around like royalty. Over time, the flexibility of the dog allowed it to adapt once more to its more current position- that of family member, watchdog and playmate.
In 1974, a couple from Colorado purchased 6 pedigreed Havanese from 2 displaced Cuban families and another 6 from a gentleman living in Costa Rica. This early attempt to rebuild the Havanese may have prevented their extinction. Just five years later in 1979, the Havanese Club of America was founded. However, it wasn’t until 1991 that the UKC recognized the Havanese breed and 1996 before the AKC assigned the Havanese a place in its toy group.
2011
The Havanese has had a colorful past for sure, but that has not stopped the breed from picking up a few tricks here and there along the way. The endearing personality of the Havanese makes it a terrific house pet and an even better friend, much like the Yorkie puppies for sale here at Affordable Pups. However, be aware, because your Havanese is quite intelligent and can find a way to manipulate a situation if need be. Think it’s not possible? Think again because your little angel will find a way to open cupboards, find the cookies and empty the box, all while you’re brushing your teeth.
With a colorful past and a unique story, the sturdy little Havanese has earned a reputation as a high spirited, curious little dog that adores people and makes a great companion.
