The French Bulldog: AKA Bouledogue Francais and Frenchie

Jun 07

French Bulldogs originated from the English Bulldog.  Lace makers in Nottingham, England bred for small sized English Bulldogs.  Eventually, during the Industrial Revolution, some of these lace makers were displaced to France, where they brought their “toy-sized” or “miniature” Bulldogs.  Further breeding and crosses with terriers and Pugs have resulted in today’s French Bulldog:  a smaller, more active version of the English Bulldog.

French Bulldogs look very similar to English Bulldogs, with short, stocky, muscular bodies, and a short, wrinkled face.  However, there are a few distinct differences.  Most notably, they are considerably smaller in weight.  An adult French Bulldog stands at about 12 inches, but weighs between 19-28 pounds.  Of note, a French Bulldog over 28 pounds is a disqualification in the show ring.  Aside from their smaller size, French Bulldog’s have upright, bat-like, ears instead of the folded down ears of both English Bulldogs and Pugs.  French Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania come in brindle, fawn, white, and brindle and white.  French Bulldogs are also more active than their distant cousins.  According the AKC, French Bulldogs are described as being, “a clown in the cloak of a philosopher.”

Despite their higher activity levels, French Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio, do not require a heavy exercise schedule.  A daily walk will suffice.  As such they make great pets for smaller houses and apartments.  As companion animals they are very affectionate with their owners and make a great family pet, as they do very well with children.  They get along with other animals quite well if the proper procedures are followed for getting the animals acquainted.

Just like Pugs and English Bulldogs, with their scrunched faces and shorter airway passages, French Bulldogs do not do well in high heat or extreme cold due to their short, thin coats.  They are very much indoor only dogs.  This is usually fine with them as they much prefer being a lap dog to being a more active, sporting dog.  However, they can be prone to weight problems if allowed to over eat without sufficient extra exercise to burn off the excess calories.

French Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio are affectionate and lively with comical personalities.  Frenchies tend to be quiet dogs who are not prone to yapping or excessive barking.  They tend to be easy to take care of with their low exercise requirements and short, thin easy to groom coats. The English Bulldog: Fighting Dog to Companion Dog

Jun 04

The English Bulldog has a long history with humans.  The first known references are from 1500 A.D. with an original spelling of “Bondogge” or “Bolddogge.”  The modern name of “bulldog” was applied after it became popular to use these dogs for bull baiting.  After the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835 ended bull baiting in England, the English Bulldog was cross bred with Pugs, which led to the shorter, wider appearance that we see today.  Selective breeding has also reduced the ferocity of the breed that had been necessary as a fighting animal.

Today, English Bulldogs are considered excellent family pets as they are gentle and loving with children and adoring of people, in general.  English Bulldogs are in the Mastiff family. English Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania can be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow, or piebald.  Most are white and another color, you can discover more here.  English Bulldogs have distinctive short, stocky (actually quite broad) shoulders, and large heads with wrinkled faces.  They commonly have an under bite, as well.  Another distinctive feature is that there is a particular wrinkle that crosses over the top of the nose, often referred to as a “rope.”  These folds of skin are often quite pronounced and require regular cleaning to avoid infections.   English Bulldogs stand between 12-16 inches and have an adult weight of 45 to 55 pounds, with those bred in the United States tending towards the lower weight scale.

Despite their strong, muscular build and fierce faces, English Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania will grow up to be gentle, loving, and affectionate.   While they are not prone to excessive barking, they will bark when they feel it is necessary and make good watchdogs.  Due to their appearance and reputation for being stubborn or “bull-headed” they are great for scaring off intruders.

English Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio make great pets for small houses and apartments, as they need very little exercise.  Even when they have access to a large yard, they are often just as happy lying next to their owner or in a lap instead of chasing a ball.  This low energy does mean that an owner needs to take care that the puppy doesn’t over eat, as their low exercise will not burn off the calories, making them prone to being overweight.  They also do better indoors as they do not tolerate heat well because of their short faces (causing less effective panting) and do not tolerate the cold well either because of their thin, short coats of hair.  However, their lack of long, thick hair also means that they require less frequent grooming.

Darling and Delightful Papillons

Apr 06

For post four of our deciding on a puppy series, we are presenting the beautiful and delicate Papillon.  The name Papillon, pronounced “pap-ee-yon,” comes from the French word for butterfly, due to how their long-haired ears look framing their faces, which resemble butterfly wings.

Papillon puppies are in the Spaniel family, and they are sometimes called the Continental Toy Spaniel.  There are actually two types of Papillons; ones with upright ears and ones with slightly dropped ears.  Both types can be seen in the same litter so there is no breed distinction between the two types.  Although the dropped-ear type is sometimes called a Phalène, which means “moth” in French.  Papillon puppies for sale in Ohio are classified as a Toy breed, standing 8-11 inches tall and weighing 5-10 lbs.  Papillons have long, silky hair and a delicate appearance.  Their tails are carried high and curled over their backs with a long fringe of hair.

Like all small dogs, Papillons can be prone to small dog syndrome.  This can easily be avoided with firm, consistent training.  Papillons have high protective instincts and should be socialized to avoid aggressive behavior tendencies.  Firm training is also needed to control any tendencies towards excessive barking.

Papillon puppies for sale in Ohio are intelligent, affectionate, and friendly dogs.  They learn tricks very easily and love to play.  Like most small dogs they are very energetic, but tend to have calmer dispositions than most other small dogs and can sit quietly in an owner’s lap.  Their high energy does require some extra exercise, such as regular walks, to ensure they don’t display behavior problems due to an over-abundance of energy.

Even though Papillon puppies for sale in Ohio have long hair, they are average shedders and not prone to matting or tangling and so do not require excessive grooming.

Their calm demeanor and unique, beautiful, and delicate appearance make Papillon puppies for sale in Ohio a great choice for someone looking for a small easy to take care of small dog.

Yorkie Puppies for Sale Ohio Weather won’t Slow Down

Mar 01

Is it snowing where you are right now? There are a few reports coming in today of inclement weather, mostly rain, but a little bit of scattered snow here and there. We’re used to it. This is Ohio and we get some adverse weather conditions at times. The good news is that Affordable Pup has Yorkie Puppies for sale in Ohio and weather won’t slow them down. Through rain, or sleet, or snow, they will be the lovable and loyal companions you expect when you choose to adopt a Yorkshire terrier.

The Yorkie is one of the most resilient breeds of toy dogs there is. They were originally developed in the nineteenth century to catch rats in textile mills. If you’ve ever tangled with a rat before you know that they are not exactly docile animals. Pet owners today think that the Yorkie bristling with anger and standing its ground against larger dogs and people is cute, but they are actually quite capable. Don’t underestimate them. Of course, you also don’t want their attitude to take them places their bodies can’t get them out of, but they still make good watchdogs.

The history brings up a good point though. Most people think they need to get a cat when they have a rodent problem. The truth is that a toy dog like our Yorkies for sale in Ohio pet owners love so dearly can be just as good a mouser as any cat can. Do you doubt that? Adopt a Yorkie and a cat together. They generally make great companions and you can actually see which one of them does a better job at daily extermination. Between the two of them you should be rodent-free in no time.

The Yorkie became so popular early on that many breeders felt they would be great for cross-breeding. The Yorkie Pom mixed their genes with what is considered one of the ancient breeds of toy dogs. The Pomeranian is a descendent of the German Spitz dog that can trace its lineage back to the Stone Age. The Yorkie Poo also gave the Yorkie some older bloodlines, though not as ancient as what was offered by breeding with Pomeranians. Poodles have been documented as a human companion as early as the fifteenth century, but little was known of them before that.

Here at Affordable Pup we have Yorkies, Yorkie Poms, and Yorkie Poos for sale. We also have pure bred teacup Pomeranians for sale. If you’re stuck in the house due to bad weather today, take some time and browse our website. Read the blog, check out the pictures of the adorable puppies we have for sale, even set up a webcam interview with a dog you have an interest in if you like. All of these options and more are available to you here at Affordable Pup. Contact us if you need any help navigating through them.

Have a Welcome Home Party for your Puppy

Feb 27

Bringing home a new puppy is very much like bringing home a new baby. The Pug Puppies for sale at our kennel are healthy but, delicate. Many people who purchase our puppies don’t generally wait 9 months but, in some respects there is the same amount of planning.

Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page; our staff has thought of every question you might want to ask about buying and caring for your new puppy. Every now and then a question comes up about our Havanese Puppies for sale or our Yorkie Poo Puppies that we haven’t thought of and if you have one of those you can email us or call us. We will be happy to address your concerns.

Plan for your puppy the way you might plan for your new baby. In our FAQ’s we recommend getting a Children’s Pack n’ Play pen before your new puppy arrives. You see these play pens frequently at the beach. They are lightweight and can be relocated easily. Your puppy should spend its time sleeping and resting in this play pen for several days after he or she comes home.

Clean your house meticulously. A human baby will stay in your arms or in its crib much of its first weeks when it is home. A puppy is a little different. Make sure there are no small objects the puppy could pick up and chew on. If you have had a rodent problem in the past vacuum up all droppings and get rid of all traps. Puppy proofing your house shouldn’t be rocket science but, your puppy will be curious so be prepared.

Find a veterinarian you trust. We don’t recommend looking in the phone book. Talk to your friends and neighbors who have dogs. The more people you talk to you will find that there are one or two very trusted vets in your area. If you are still concerned go and visit a few and introduce yourself. Many times you can tell how your puppy will be treated by the way the staff treats you.

These first 2 weeks in your home are the most critical for your new puppy. Keep him or her in the warmest part of the house. If you have children talk to them before the puppy comes home. The temptation to hold and cuddle a puppy is strong, nature made it that way for a reason. A few supervised minutes 2 or 3 times a day is plenty. This is a new environment for your puppy they need time to get to know you and his or her new surroundings.

Finally, the two most important things for a puppy are food and rest. Our FAQ page is a sort of bible when it comes to feeding your puppy. Before your puppy arrives; make sure you have all the necessary food we recommend. Just like a human baby they need feeding every 2 to 3 hours. Set you alarm and get up to feed your puppy if he or she doesn’t get you up first. Rest, Rest and more Rest is our stern recommendation. Don’t let your puppy be bothered; as the saying goes let sleeping dogs lie. When they sleep they grow. Don’t do anything to inhibit that.

As always if there are any questions please don’t hesitate to call us.

Teacup Breeds Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Feb 23

Affordablepup.com has affectionate Teacup Maltese for sale to provide fun and happiness to a loving family. The pom puppies for sale at our facility will have their owners wrapped around their finger in no time. All of the puppies purchased from our kennel are extraordinary but, some puppies have what can only be defined as a 6th sense. Somehow nature has instilled in their little hearts a wisdom many other dogs don’t have and that wisdom is what a therapy dog has.

There are many ‘sayings’ about people who go into one of the helping fields. Comments like ‘teachers are born and not made’ or ‘when other children were playing on the playground she was inside caring for her sick baby doll.’ Many people know from very early on what they were put on this earth to do. Some of our dogs, we believe, have that same intuition.

Therapy dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the larger dogs are used to help patients in physical therapy by slowly walking with them or simply encouraging them with the wag of a tail. The larger dogs certainly serve their purpose but, it is the smaller dogs especially the teacup breeds that make all the difference for a hospitalized or Hospice patient.

The smaller breeds, like the Teacup Yorkies for sale Ohio pet owners love so much, can sit in the lap of a bedridden patient. Have you ever had a Labrador sit in your lap? For those patients something small, warm and affectionate to cuddle means the world to them. The small breeds enjoy closeness and much of the time will lick the face of the person who is holding them. A therapy dog does more than just visit one person. What many health facilities don’t know is the therapy dog will create a bond between other patients. When ambulatory patients find out there is a therapy dog in someone else’s room they will go to that room. Those patients may have not known each other prior to the dogs visit but, after the dog leaves they will have something in common to chat about. The dog reduces loneliness even when he or she isn’t there.

Therapy dogs have to go through classes and certification but, many of our puppies are naturals at what they do and breeze through the training. Our wish at Affordablepup.com is for you to have a puppy as a loving companion. However, if you think you have a puppy with a healing spirit, and you will know soon after you get them home, talk the therapy dog certification team in your area. Then take your puppy to a Hospice facility one a week and let him or her cuddle with the residents. You will take pride in what your puppy can do for others. Drop us a line or send us a picture of your dog doing what they were born to do.
