A popular hybrid breed, the Maltipom, also called the Pomanese or Pomanees, is a combination of the Maltese and the Pomeranian breeds. As they are not purebred dogs, the breed is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC). Pulling behavioral characteristics and physical traits from both parent breeds, the Maltipom is a little dog, with long flowing hair known for its quick, fiery attitude and gregarious nature. Very small in size, the average Maltipom is less than 10 pounds with an expressive face and an alertness that can only be compared to a fox.
The Best Combination
With any hybrid dog, it is common to get a mixture of both physical and personality traits that are characteristic of the parents. On account of the Pomeranian influence, the colors are varied including white, black, orange, red and even cream. They may be solid or patterned, but always result in a long, flowing, beautifully colored coat. Remember, the Maltipom coat continues to grow like human hair even after it is trimmed. If you are not interested in maintaining it long, it is possible to cut the hair shorter to avoid frequent grooming.
Personality
The easy going, intelligent nature of the Maltese is paired perfectly with the territorial, cautious nature of the Pomeranian. The result- a gregarious, fun loving dog that happily welcomes others, but is loyal and faithful to his own family. In other words, the Maltipom can be social and fearless but knows where to draw the line.
