Why Only Toy Dogs Should Wear Sweaters

Jan 19

You’re not really going to put that sweater on your pit bull, are you? Your German shepherd doesn’t need extra clothing either, nor does your lab, your Doberman pinscher, or even your beagle. These dogs are not cold. They have a coat that protects them and they’re more suited to the outdoors than you are, so don’t try to get them to wear your clothes. It’s embarrassing to the dog and makes your neighbors think you’re a little off your rocker. Only toy dogs should wear sweaters, and even then it should be purely out of necessity, not because you want to play dress-up.

The Yorkies for sale we have here at Affordable Pup are one of the most popular toy dog breeds. As they grow and get older, they often shake and are perceived to have problems with being cold. This may not be the case. A warm sweater in winter is okay for a small dog, particularly if you’re taking him out for a walk, but don’t ignore the possibility that there could be additional health problems causing the shaking. Yorkies often suffer from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. This will also cause shaking and should be attended to immediately. Hypoglycemia can cause a dog to go into a coma.

Since they have very fine hair, Yorkies do get cold, so there’s a good chance that the temperature is the reason for the shaking. During the winter it may be advantageous to you and your dog to work on some indoor paper training for those really cold days. Unlike larger dogs, Yorkies don’t leave large piles of waste. Some pet owners even train them to use a litter box, like a cat. If you live in a climate where sub zero temperatures are common you might want to look into these possibilities. You’ll also want to invest in some warm sweaters or sweatshirts for when you do have to go outside.

Other Toy Breeds that might benefit from Warm Clothing

The Chihuahua shares many of the same health concerns of the Yorkie. They have extremely fine hair and are susceptible to hypoglycemia, so get any shaking checked out right away. They also often suffer from another condition called subluxation of the patella” which is more commonly known as “slipped stifles” or simply “loose kneecaps”.  This condition can cause shaking too and may need surgery if it’s an extreme case. Contact your vet immediately if your Chihuahua is having trouble walking.

Another example is the English bulldogs for sale we have here at Affordable Pup. The English bulldog is another breed you see wearing clothing. Be very careful if you own one of these dogs and haven’t dressed him before. The skin of an English bulldog is extremely sensitive to rough materials and the breed is highly vulnerable to heatstroke. Their skin is very thin and will react in negative fashion to any substance or weather condition that irritates it. Do some additional research or ask your vet before you purchase or make any clothing for your English bulldog.

Did you know we have Yorkie Poo Puppies for Sale?

Dec 22

Cross breeding dogs gives the offspring a combination of strengths from both parents and often leads to the creation of an entirely new breed. The Yorkie Poo, though not recognized as an independent breed by the American Kennel Club, comes very close to falling in that category anyway. Crossing a Yorkshire terrier with a miniature or toy poodle produces a teacup puppy that is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. They are also, according to those who own them, the most lovable and loyal dogs on earth.

Here at Affordable Pup we do have Yorkie Poo puppies for sale. If you don’t see any listed on the website give us a call or send an email letting us know that you’re interested in one. We’ll do a search among our favorite breeders and families to see if there are any Yorkie Poo puppies available right now. At the very least we can find out if any are being raised and expected to be of adoptive age soon or if there are any breeding attempts presently in the works. You may need to wait, but we’ll get you a Yorkie Poo. We see them become available fairly frequently.

Are cross bred dogs healthier than their pure bred counterparts? The debate has raged on for decades. Some claim that pure bred dogs are healthier because they are not subject to the genetic abnormalities of two breeds. Others believe that too much inbreeding actually leads to genetic abnormality and that the cross bred dogs have a better chance to live longer healthier lives. We have both pure bred Yorkies and teacup Yorkie Poo puppies for sale on a regular basis and can’t really say which type of dog is stronger or healthier. Both are wonderful animals in our eyes.

What cannot be disputed is the happiness and joy that Yorkie poodle puppies bring to a home. They might be considered cross breeds to the AKC, but they are full-fledged members of the families who buy them from us. We get regular emails and phone calls from our customers expressing satisfaction and gratitude for the change in their lives a Yorkie Poo has made. The breed is fiercely loyal and love their owners unconditionally, a life-changing experience for those who haven’t been through it before and a reinforcement in belief systems for those who have.

If you’re looking for Yorkie Poo puppies for sale you have come to the right place. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting with one before, take advantage of our web cam feature and make an appointment to visit with one. The Yorkie Poo is a lovable companion who will be with you well over a decade if you adopt him as a puppy. Some live past fifteen, sometimes even twenty years. Yorkies May Be Small, But They Live a Long Time

Dec 08

What is it about the Yorkie that keeps us coming back for more? Is it the great temperament or the zest for life that we love? How about the fact that they make great pets for those of us who live in apartments? Perhaps it’s something even simpler. The truth is, Yorkies may be small, but they live a long time and we can’t imagine life without them. With an average life span of 12-15 years, the Yorkie makes a terrific companion and friend for just about anyone.

About the Yorkie

The Yorkshire Terrier, or “Yorkie” as they’re lovingly called, are recognized as part of the Terrier group by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Originally bred to hunt and kill rats, the modern Yorkie has come a long way since those days, often enjoying life as a pampered pet. A perfect little companion dog, many Yorkies have hidden talents and impress their owners with great skill in obedience training, agility and even pet therapy. Yorkies are natural performers and enjoy learning all different kinds of tricks.

Physical Characteristics

A rather small breed of dog, the Yorkie typically reaches only 6 or 7 inches high and weighs in at around 7 pounds full grown. When a Yorkie is first born, his coat is black and tan. However, as he matures, the black turns a steely blue in color, similar to an ageing human whose hair turns from brown to gray over time. Bring on the blue hairs because we love them! The coat parts in the middle, falling evenly on both sides. Soft and silky, it’s not unusual to see a well groomed Yorkie with beautiful bows keeping the coat around the face out of the eyes.

Temperament

As any owner of a Yorkie will tell you, they love excitement and will almost never turn down the chance to have fun. Whether activities are planned for inside or out, the Yorkie will thrive where there’s a lot of people and a lot of smiles. As for playing, Yorkies love to play fetch or games involving hide and seek. Obedience training is particularly fun as they have a unique desire to please their owners and delight in making them proud.

Health

To keep your Yorkshire Terrier healthy and feeling great, it’s important to make certain that he gets outside at least once every day. Regular exercise will not only keep him lean, but also help muscles and joints work well. Even a brisk ten minute walk will ensure that your dog’s heart stays healthy. Remember, always make certain your Yorkie is warm enough in colder weather. While little sweaters look adorable, for small dogs like the Yorkie, they also play an important role in maintaining proper body temperature. Most Yorkies stay relatively healthy for a long time and with proper nutrition and regular exercise will live for an average of 12 years.

A Yorkie is a fabulous pet for so many reasons. In addition to a gregarious personality that makes us laugh, the Yorkie is a born performer and a natural at many activities. Take the time to properly care for your Yorkie by ensuring that he gets plenty of exercise and eats well and he will live happy and healthy for many years to come.

The Shih Tzu Can Trace its Lineage Back 10,000 Years

Dec 05

The history of dogs is amazing. With 701 different modern breeds, dogs are found everywhere on the planet except Antarctica. While most theories agree that all dogs originated in the Far East, there is some disagreement as to exactly how or where. Nevertheless, most scholars would agree that the Shih Tzu is undoubtedly one of the earliest breeds and can trace its lineage back approximately 10,000 years.

Prehistoric Beginnings

Every canine, including the Shih Tzu, can trace its beginnings back to the same prehistoric relative, the Hesperocyonines, an animal that looked like a cross between a fox and a weasel. Fossil records have this creature originating in North America about 40 million years ago, evolving into several different species of dog before its extinction 15 million years ago. Modern day foxes, wolves, jackals, coyotes and dogs all have the same beginning, and are distant relatives of the Hesperocyonines. While no one is alive to tell us precisely, fossils provide evidence to support the idea that the dog first became domesticated somewhere around 15,000 years ago. The dog continued to evolve into thousands of different breeds, varying in size, shape and appearance.

The Far East

Most likely, the modern day dog originated in China, with many of today’s breeds evolving from these early ancient Chinese breeds. The Shih Tzu is one of the closest modern relatives of these ancient breeds and while there is still debate as to exactly where the dog originated, skeletal remains dating back 10,000 years ago resemble the modern day Pug and Shih Tzu. Nevertheless, some historians believe that the Shih Tzu came about as a cross between Pekingese and a Tibetan dog called the Lhasa Apso. These ancient dogs were selectively bred in the forbidden city of Peking as Tibetan holy dogs. Shih Tzu translates as “lion dog”, because the dog was originally bred to resemble the “lion as depicted in traditional oriental art”.

Modern Day Shih Tzu

It wasn’t until the 1930’s that the Shih Tzu was imported into Europe, and shortly after, the United States. The Shih Tzu made its presence known in America after World War II when soldiers returned home from Europe with their dogs. However, it wasn’t until 1969 before they were recognized as their own breed as part of the toy group by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Today, the modern Shih Tzu is recognized by all the major Kennel Clubs in the world and has become quite popular among breeders and families alike. The Shih Tzu is fairly common in American households and continues to be a fascinating animal with some extremely human like characteristics. Known for their affection and intelligence, the Shih Tzu is active and happy, yet walks with slight nobility that can only be explained by their colorful past. Revered by the Chinese as a prized companion, the modern day Shi Tzu walks with a grace and sophistication that can only be explained by thousands of years of adoration.

The Origins and History of the Chihuahua

Dec 01

Named after the Mexican state of the same name, the Chihuahua has a somewhat puzzling origin and history. While there are no agreed upon facts, there is a unique combination of pottery, folklore, drawings and documents that have been combined to create two different theories as to where and how the breed came about.

Mexico or Europe?

The most widely accepted theory explaining the origins of the Chihuahua involves Mexico. Historians believe that the dog is a descendent of the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. There are archeological finds to support this first theory including carvings dating back to the 9th century A.D. of small dogs with round heads and large erect ears. There are also pottery remains resembling the Chihuahua that have been found along with materials from the Pyramids of Cholula in the Yucatán Peninsula. As the theory goes, the Chihuahua was used by the Toltec civilization in religious ceremonies and was an extremely revered animal. In many cases, the Chihuahua was believed to have mystical, healing powers and could cure disease.

Other theories place the origins of the Chihuahua in the islands of the Mediterranean. Evidence to support this claim comes from fifteenth century European paintings that depict dogs resembling the Chihuahua. What’s interesting about this theory is that the paintings were completed ten years before Christopher Columbus r4eturned from the New World. In other words, it would have been impossible for the painter of these paintings to have seen a Mexican dog to include in a painting. One painting resides in the Sistine Chapel and depicts a small boy holding a very small dog that looks strikingly like a Chihuahua. The theory continues that the dog was taken to other parts of Europe by trading ship.

About the Breed

Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904, the Chihuahua of today is much smaller than its ancestors, and is actually the smallest recognized breed, weighing slightly less than 6 pounds. There are two types of coats- long coat and smooth coat or short haired. As for color, the Chihuahua range from solid black to solid white and a variety of color patterns in between. Most often, the primary colors are red, black, fawn, cream and even blue.

For the most part, the Chihuahua is an extremely loyal, protective dog. In some cases, this extreme loyalty can be misinterpreted as aggression, particularly towards other animals. Nevertheless, with a dedication that is tough to beat, the Chihuahua makes a terrific loyal companion.

We may never know for sure if the Chihuahua originated in Mexico or Europe, and while the exact history and facts surrounding the breed may be unclear, there is no uncertainty surrounding the breeds commitment and devotion to its owner. As a faithful friend, the Chihuahua brings reliability to a different level. With dedication that is unparalleled and a strong desire to protect the one they love, the Chihuahua makes a terrific companion and lifelong friend.
