The Origins and History of the Chihuahua

Named after the Mexican state of the same name, the Chihuahua has a somewhat puzzling origin and history. While there are no agreed upon facts, there is a unique combination of pottery, folklore, drawings and documents that have been combined to create two different theories as to where and how the breed came about.
Mexico or Europe?
The most widely accepted theory explaining the origins of the Chihuahua involves Mexico. Historians believe that the dog is a descendent of the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. There are archeological finds to support this first theory including carvings dating back to the 9th century A.D. of small dogs with round heads and large erect ears. There are also pottery remains resembling the Chihuahua that have been found along with materials from the Pyramids of Cholula in the Yucatán Peninsula. As the theory goes, the Chihuahua was used by the Toltec civilization in religious ceremonies and was an extremely revered animal. In many cases, the Chihuahua was believed to have mystical, healing powers and could cure disease.
Other theories place the origins of the Chihuahua in the islands of the Mediterranean. Evidence to support this claim comes from fifteenth century European paintings that depict dogs resembling the Chihuahua. What’s interesting about this theory is that the paintings were completed ten years before Christopher Columbus r4eturned from the New World. In other words, it would have been impossible for the painter of these paintings to have seen a Mexican dog to include in a painting. One painting resides in the Sistine Chapel and depicts a small boy holding a very small dog that looks strikingly like a Chihuahua. The theory continues that the dog was taken to other parts of Europe by trading ship.
About the Breed
Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904, the Chihuahua of today is much smaller than its ancestors, and is actually the smallest recognized breed, weighing slightly less than 6 pounds. There are two types of coats- long coat and smooth coat or short haired. As for color, the Chihuahua range from solid black to solid white and a variety of color patterns in between. Most often, the primary colors are red, black, fawn, cream and even blue.
For the most part, the Chihuahua is an extremely loyal, protective dog. In some cases, this extreme loyalty can be misinterpreted as aggression, particularly towards other animals. Nevertheless, with a dedication that is tough to beat, the Chihuahua makes a terrific loyal companion.
We may never know for sure if the Chihuahua originated in Mexico or Europe, and while the exact history and facts surrounding the breed may be unclear, there is no uncertainty surrounding the breeds commitment and devotion to its owner. As a faithful friend, the Chihuahua brings reliability to a different level. With dedication that is unparalleled and a strong desire to protect the one they love, the Chihuahua makes a terrific companion and lifelong friend.
