Our staff has a good chuckle every time we get a letter or an email about the devotion and protective nature of our little dogs.  Many of these breeds think nothing of approaching a human 10 times their size and letting them know whose boss.

One of those breeds is the Teacup Morkie.   Some would call this breed a hybrid or a designer dog but, it is a wonderful breed for so many reasons.  Morkies came into being by breeding a Maltese and a Yorkie.  Each breed brought its own uniqueness into the mix and what the breeder received was nothing short of the ideal toy dog.  Morkies are truly fearless. They do not hesitate to sound the alert when they sense danger.  Their temperament with their owners is legendary.  They are full of energy but are very social animals.

Legends of the Ancient and Honorable Pug

When a dog breed has been around for 2500 years there are sure to be a few good stories about it. Depictions of the Chinese pug can be found as far back as 551 BC when they were often found on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns of the Shang Dynasty. Confucius actually mentioned a pug in one of his writings, describing it as a “short mouthed dog” in one scroll. This writing was a rare find because the Emperor Qin Shi destroyed all the records he could find on the Pug’s origins in 221 BC. The Pug can also be found in Tibet where they have been the companions of Buddhist monks for two millennia. Another, in the 18th Century, took messages back and forth from Les Carmes prison for Josephine Bonaparte, the wife of Napoleon. Chihuahuas are the Smallest AKC Recognized Breed

They are the smallest recognized breed by the American Kennel Club, with a standard of six pounds or less, and their origins are shrouded in mystery, giving them a certain mystique in selected circles. The most broadly accepted theory is that they come from Mexico and are descended from the Techichi, a favored pet of the Toltecs, but the records of that civilization are incomplete at best and limited evidence has been found.

Another theory, one that actually has some historical evidence behind it, is that the Chihuahua first originated in Europe, possibly on the island of Malta. There is a fresco in the Sistine Chapel, painted by Sandro Boticelli in 1482, that depicts a dog that looks exactly like the Chihuahua. Columbus didn’t return from the Americas until ten years later so it’s not possible that Boticelli could have seen the Mexican version.

Is it possible that similar breeds developed on two different sides of the world or did the Chihuahua evolve early in human history when the Asian and North American land masses were connected? There are eerie similarities between some of the Asian races and South American Indian tribes. Why not two nearly identical dog breeds? The Maltese was first depicted in literature back in 500 BC on a small Etruscan Island south of a fledgling republic that would someday become the Empire of Rome. The Pomeranian is a descendent of the German Spitz dog, once thought to be the oldest dog breed on the planet with characteristics seen in many Stone Age fossilized remains of early canines. That has since been disproved by genetic evidence, but the Pomeranian is still considered royalty among toy dog breeders. Yorkies and Cats can be Best Friends

What happens when you take one of our Yorkies for sale named Satara and put her together with an alley cat named Fuzz? You get a friendship that will last a lifetime. The oddest of all odd couples once granted me one of the happiest moments of my life. Thrust together purely by blind circumstance, these two lovable pets were not only able to co-exist; they became inseparable companions, until one day Fuzz made it out the door. She ran, it snowed, the days went by, and we gave up on her, but Satara never did.

If you’re a Yorkie owner you know that when they bond with another pet or a human, it’s for life. Fuzz was gone for six days in what has become a legendary ice storm that no creature could possibly survive in. Satara sat quietly on the couch through most of it, though if you crouched down close to her you could hear the faintest whimper each time the wind blew against the glass. When the storm finally broke and the sun broke through, the relief for her was as pronounced as it was for the rest of us.

The first thing we did was go to the supermarket to do a little shopping. The cupboards were bare and not a soul in our domicile wanted to stare at those four walls any longer. Casting aside our grief over our lost feline friend and arming ourselves with the hopes that she was in a better place, we ventured out onto the treacherous winter roads. A few feet of snow had accumulated by now, but the streets were drivable and the sun was shining. We traveled, we shopped, and we came home. The front door opened and Satara came out to watch us unload, barking merrily as she always did in those circumstances – loud enough for another to hear.

Like the Phoenix of legend, Fuzz emerged from beneath the house where she had spent the last six days and seven nights, none the worse for wear, eager to greet her Yorkie compatriot. Satara somehow knew that Fuzz had survived. There was no grief in her, no despair, and obviously no doubt that she would see her friend again. As the tiger striped alley cat bounded down the slope of the snow bank she was headed directly towards my Yorkie, not into my arms, though that’s where she ended up. It was my dog that brought my cat back to me. What are the odds of that? They’re actually pretty good. Any one of our Yorkie puppies for sale would make a great companion for your cat.

Good things come in small packages. In my case, there were two small packages that day, one canine and one feline. Opposites and rivals according to tradition and vilified as bitter enemies in literature, these two companions found a way to be together after that storm and are still together today – with one minor addition. Fuzz has three kittens now. Apparently she spent her time that week doing more than just surviving. Satara doesn’t mind though. Now she has four feline friends instead of just one.
