Chihuahuas are the Smallest AKC Recognized Breed

Feb 06

The Chihuahua puppies for sale we have here at Affordable Pup are considered by many to be the most interesting breed of toy dog there is. They are the smallest recognized breed by the American Kennel Club, with a standard of six pounds or less, and their origins are shrouded in mystery, giving them a certain mystique in selected circles. The most broadly accepted theory is that they come from Mexico and are descended from the Techichi, a favored pet of the Toltecs, but the records of that civilization are incomplete at best and limited evidence has been found.

Another theory, one that actually has some historical evidence behind it, is that the Chihuahua first originated in Europe, possibly on the island of Malta. There is a fresco in the Sistine Chapel, painted by Sandro Boticelli in 1482, that depicts a dog that looks exactly like the Chihuahua. Columbus didn’t return from the Americas until ten years later so it’s not possible that Boticelli could have seen the Mexican version.

Is it possible that similar breeds developed on two different sides of the world or did the Chihuahua evolve early in human history when the Asian and North American land masses were connected? There are eerie similarities between some of the Asian races and South American Indian tribes. Why not two nearly identical dog breeds? Some of the teacup Chihuahua puppies for sale we come across could have European origins. We can’t really tell. Their barks don’t seem to have any kind of accent.

Human beings, with our unfettered imaginations, can come up with conspiracy theories and ghost stories about anything. There’s a legend about El Lobo in Mexico, the gray wolf that is believed to be the ancestor of the Chihuahua. The species isn’t often seen these days and some believe it to be extinct. The superstitious tend to associate any sightings with either bad or good luck depending on the region and circumstances. To those folks, the Chihuahua is a sacred animal, one that is treated like a god.

Of course, the Chihuahua isn’t the only dog here with legends attached to it. The Maltese puppies for sale have ancestry that can be traced back to 500 BC, Pomeranians descend from prehistoric Spitz dogs, and Havanese were nearly extinct in the United States at one point. What do they all have in common? They’re all available here at Affordable Pup. Come on inside and meet some of them.
