For post four of our deciding on a puppy series, we are presenting the beautiful and delicate Papillon.  The name Papillon, pronounced “pap-ee-yon,” comes from the French word for butterfly, due to how their long-haired ears look framing their faces, which resemble butterfly wings.

Papillon puppies are in the Spaniel family, and they are sometimes called the Continental Toy Spaniel.  There are actually two types of Papillons; ones with upright ears and ones with slightly dropped ears.  Both types can be seen in the same litter so there is no breed distinction between the two types.  Although the dropped-ear type is sometimes called a Phalène, which means “moth” in French.  Papillon puppies for sale in Ohio are classified as a Toy breed, standing 8-11 inches tall and weighing 5-10 lbs.  Papillons have long, silky hair and a delicate appearance.  Their tails are carried high and curled over their backs with a long fringe of hair.

Originally known as “Ye ancient dogge of Malta,” Maltese have been a favored companion dog among the aristocracy and royalty around the world for hundreds of years.  The most ancient record of a Maltese is from a Greek artifact dated around 500 B.C.  Members of the Toy classification, Maltese puppies for sale in Ohio have an adult height of 8-10 inches and weigh between 4-6 lbs. Maltese are known for their very distinctive appearance.  They are small dogs with very long, pure white hair, a black button nose, and dark eyes.

For our seventh post on our Deciding on a Puppy series, we are introducing the Havanese, Cuba’s national dog.

Havanese, meaning of Havana, are in the Bichon family and were developed in Cuba.  They are unique among small dog breeds for having a more “sturdy” build and a “springy” gait.  This springy gait, in particular, is a distinguishing quality.  Havanese puppies for sale in Ohio come in many colors and color combinations.  They have a double coat, but not a thick one, due to their being developed in a very warm climate.  They have long hair that tends to be wavy or curly.
