Car Trips with your Dog: Safety Tips

May 07

Who doesn’t smile when you’re in your car, and you see a happy canine face poking out a car window enjoying the wind?  Or how sweetly a tiny dog sits in his owners lap, looking out the window, while they are driving?  People who love their pets want to include them in more than just home life, and many dogs love traveling with their owners.  If you’ve just bought a new puppy such as one of our Yorkie or Pom puppies in Ohio and Pennsylvania, you’ll need your puppy to travel to the vet and other places such as obedience school or to the park for socialization.  However, before you take your dog for a car ride, there are some things to do to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time.

As cute as it is to have your dog in your lap or just up front with you, this is actually a very, very dangerous situation for you and your dog.  A loose dog in the car can be a distraction while driving.  A dog sitting in a driver’s lap can interfere with steering and other functions or could accidentally bump a control or the wheel while adjusting position.  In addition, in the event of an accident, caused by someone else, the loose dog could get thrown around the vehicle, get hit by an airbag, or be crushed between you and the steering wheel or between you and an airbag deploying from the steering wheel.

Now that you’re aware of the dangers, what can you do to keep your dog safe in the car?  Firstly, it’s best for your dog to be in the back seat, just like it’s safer for a small child.  In addition, there are many options for dog restraints that work similarly in concept to a child safety seat or booster seat.  The three easy solutions:  a harness and strap which connects to the car’s existing seat belt, a padded platform which is strapped in with the seat belt, and has another strap that connects to a dog harness, or a dog carrier, strapped in with a seat belt.  While your dog may be less happy about car trips if he or she is restrained, it’s much safer for both of you.

Another unfortunate danger is having an open window.  While many dogs enjoy poking their heads out to enjoy the breeze, this isn’t quite the innocent pleasure it seems.  Some obvious reasons are that your dog could jump out or be thrown out by a bump, sudden turn, or swerve.   Some less obvious, but dangerous, concerns are that that breeze can dry out their eyes or carry dirt, grit, or other debris that could damage their eyes, in addition, all that ear flapping can damage the blood vessels in their ears.  It’s best to keep windows closed or minimally cracked.  It’s also best to use the child safety features to disable the window controls so that your dog can’t accidentally trigger the window to go up or down.

One of the most important things you can do for your puppy is to make sure he or she gets socialization training.  Ideally, this occurs during their first 16 weeks of life.  Many veterinarians and professional dog trainers stress that the first 16 weeks is the crucial learning stage that sets a dog’s personality for life.  Providing socialization training while still this young exposes them to a variety of sights, sounds, people, and animals, so that they are comfortable with dealing with new situations.  An uncomfortable, unsocialized dog is more prone to being afraid and reacting poorly by barking, growling, biting, and acting in other aggressive manners.

Before a puppy has all his vaccines, around 12 weeks, it’s best if people come to him.  Invite friends of all ages and ethnicities over to meet the new puppy.  Let them know that the idea is for the puppy to interact with different kinds of people.  By introducing him to a wide variety of ages and races, he will learn that it’s ok for people to be different from what he’s used to seeing.  It’s a good idea to introduce him to other animals, but only if you know that they are up to date on their vaccines.  You also need to be sure that those animals have been properly trained and don’t have any dog aggressive tendencies.  One bad experience like that could damage your puppy’s emotional health.

Once a puppy has sufficient vaccines, particularly rabies, you can begin to expose her to other animals and people in public.  There are many ways to do this.  Firstly, by taking her to obedience training classes you will be getting behavior training and socialization training.  Many pet stores allow customers to bring their dogs with them shopping.  Walking in the park is a great way to socialize your puppy as there will be many people walking and kids playing, as well as, other people out with their dogs.  Another great way to socialize your puppy with other dogs is by finding a dog park for her to be able to play directly with other dogs.

During socialization training, never encourage aggressive or fearful behaviors like barking, growling, or running away.  If your puppy is displaying any of these behaviors, don’t cuddle them, as this will seem like a reward.  Firmly tell them no, and reward the good behavior, instead.

Socializing can seem like a lot of work at first, but in the long run you will have a well-adjusted, emotionally strong dog with a great attitude and good manners.

Dog and Puppy Bathing Tips

There are many options for having your dog or puppy groomed.  One option is to have a professional groomer take care of this for you.  There are many benefits to this.  For one thing, it can save on time to be able to just drop off and pick up your dog for service.  Some people also worry about doing it right, especially if your dog requires a haircut, nail trim, or trimming in sensitive areas like the legs, tail, or between the paw pads.  Many pet stores offer grooming services, as well as there being special places that are just for dog grooming.  In addition, if you shop around, you might even be able to find a grooming service that comes right to your home, so that you don’t even have to leave the house, which is convenient for you as well as being beneficial if your dog doesn’t do well with car rides or being in strange places.  Some people are better off with a professional service if they have a particularly large dog or one that does not cooperate for bathing.

On the other hand if you are willing and able to do the grooming yourself there are a number of benefits.  The most obvious is that it can save a lot of money to do it yourself.  But in addition to that it can be a great way to have some extra bonding time with your dog.  If you are able to start regularly bathing your dog as a young puppy, they will be less likely to have issues with it as an adult dog.

Before bathing any age dog, make sure to brush them thoroughly first to dislodge and get rid of excess loose hair, dirt, mats, or anything else stuck in the fur.  Next, wet the dog to the skin with warm, but not hot water.  Scrub well with an age appropriate shampoo.  Try and keep them from licking it off during the washing process.  Rinse well.  Shampoo residue can be harmful if ingested, and it can make the hair sticky or matted when it dries.  Towel dry any excess water and let air dry.  If it’s particularly cold, you may want to use a hair drier, but keep it set to cool or warm, never hot.  For a particularly thin coated dog, even in winter, they might be better off, and happier, with a vigorous toweling off and some time wrapped in a dry towel on your lap.

While they sell dog “conditioners” this isn’t something that you should need to use on your dog.  It might be helpful in getting out tangles, but regular brushing and a diet with enough fats and proteins, will encourage your dog to produce sufficient oils to keep the hair soft and shiny.  Keep in mind that some dogs just don’t have soft coats, so their hair should be stiff or wiry.

All About Perky Pug puppies for sale in Ohio & Pennsylvania

Apr 30

Today we’re talking all about the “perky” Pug. Pugs have a long history with humans.  Records dating back to 600 B.C. in China mention “short-mouthed” dogs that may refer to Pugs or at the very least a Pug ancestor.  Pugs were first brought to Europe in the late 1500’s by traders, particularly Dutch traders who called them “Mopshond.”  From there they spread rapidly across Europe to France, Spain, and England.

Pugs are classified as a Toy breed, but they are the largest of that classification.  Adult Pugs weigh around 14-18 lbs and stand 12-14 in tall.  Pug puppies for sale in Ohio are ideal for people looking for a dog that is small, but not a delicate “fru-fru” dog.  Pugs do not display the excitability that many small dogs exhibit.  For one thing they are not prone to excessive barking or “yipping” like many other small dogs.  Generally speaking they are not aggressive dogs, either, which makes them great with children or older people.

Pug puppies for sale in Pennsylvania are easily distinguished from other dog breeds by their “smooshed,” wrinkled faces, tight curled tails, stocky bodies, and short hair.  Pugs actually have a double coat and are therefore excessive shedders.  Some of this can be reduced by experimenting with their diets and through regular grooming.  Their standard colors are apricot, fawn, black, and silver.  Some people classify apricot and silver as variations of fawn.  The light colored Pugs often have a black face mask. While Pugs have a sturdy body, their short noses make them prone to snoring, snorting, and snuffling.  Dogs cool off by panting which helps to dissipate body heat, but Pugs have a hard time with this because of their flat faces and short noses.  This makes them very intolerant of high temperatures and cannot be left outside for too long.

Pugs are very playful and are sometimes called “clowns.”  They enjoy acting silly and getting their owners to laugh at them.  Their “puppy” stage often lasts until they are 2 or 3 years old.  However, they are generally low activity dogs, requiring very little exercise.  This does mean that diet is very important.  They are prone to overeating, which results in Pugs becoming dangerously overweight.  An overweight Pug will have a shorter life span.

Generally speaking, Pug puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania make great pets for people with small homes, little to no yard, and a sense of humor. Like any other dog breed, training should start early and be firm and consistent.

Introducing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Apr 27

One of the most popular type of dog in England is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.  But you don’t have to live in England to get one.  There are Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania that can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.  Read on to learn more about what makes these dogs so popular.

Firstly, we need to point out that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (sometimes just called Cavaliers) is different from the King Charles Spaniel.  They share a similar history and origins, but Cavaliers are an attempt to recreate the original long-nosed, domed-headed, small spaniel that was made popular by King Charles I & King Charles II.  During the reign of William and Mary, short-nosed dogs such as the Pug had become popular and were interbred with the small spaniels creating the current King Charles Spaniel.  The idea to bring back the long-nosed variety was started by American Roswell Eldridge who offered a prize at a dog show for the best male and female examples of the “old type.”  Eldridge died before show, but others took up his idea and the product is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for sale in Pennsylvania are in Toy classification.  Their adult size is usually about the size of an adolescent of other spaniel breeds.  They stand 12-13 inches and weigh about 10-18 lbs.  Cavaliers come in four color varieties:  Blenheim (light brown to red spots on white), tri-colored (black and brown/red spots on white), black and tan, and solid ruby.  Cavaliers have the typical long wavy haired ears of other spaniels, as well as a medium length coat, and feathering on the legs, feet, and tail.  Despite having slightly long hair, they are not prone to tangling or matting.

Another striking point of the breed is their affection for humans and other animals.  They tend to be very friendly, and therefore, do not make good guard dogs.  On the plus side, this means they are not prone to excessive barking.  Also, Cavalier puppies for sale in Ohio  will likely get along with other dogs that may already live in the home or that might be acquired in the future.  Being spaniels, which have been used for centuries as hunting dogs, they have a strong instinct to chase small animals and birds.  While this instinct can be somewhat overcome with significant and early training, it is best that when going for a walk, they are always on a leash.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for sale in Pennsylvania will grow up to be loving, energetic, and loyal family members that are ideally suited to the life of a companion dog.

New Puppy Training Tips: Start Early!

Apr 24

Still deciding on a puppy?  Check out our pages on Yorkie puppies for sale, Maltese puppies for sale, Havanese puppies for sale, Pug puppies for sale, and more puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

We can’t stress enough that the key to long-term happiness for you and your new puppy is firm, consistent training that starts from day one.  That cute little puppy will eventually be an adult dog.  Behaviors that might be cute now, won’t be forever.  It can be tough to resist the urge to let your puppy get away with things that you know won’t be acceptable later, such as getting on furniture, chewing on shoes, and barking.  Decide now what behaviors are acceptable and which are not.  Then become prepared to stick to those rules for your puppy.

One easy way to train your puppy and yourself is to take a puppy training or obedience class.  This is also a great way for your puppy to become more socialized.  Dogs that are socialized early are less likely to fear strangers and bite or bark incessantly.  Training classes offer the additional benefit of providing you with someone experienced to learn from, who can answer questions, and can provide assistance or advice if you have problems training your puppy.   If you can’t fit a puppy training class into your schedule or you can’t afford one, you can still socialize and train your puppy.  There are numerous books as well as websites that offer advice on puppy training.  Below are a few of our suggestions to get you started with successful puppy training.

Consider crate training.  Crate training offers many benefits.  Your puppy will enjoy having his own space or den to call his own.  It will be a reassuring place for your puppy to relax.  It also provides a safe place for you puppy to be while you are away from home or asleep.  This will limit his ability to explore areas that might be dangerous for him.  It will also provide a place for your puppy to be when there’s a lot of activity going on, and he might get caught underfoot and injured.  In addition, it can be a more desirable location than the living room floor or couch for your puppy to chew on treats or other messier chewies such as rawhides that can involve drooling.

Be firm about undesirable behaviors such as jumping and barking.  While it is a natural response for a puppy to jump and bark when excited, these behaviors should not be allowed as they could be dangerous in an adult dog.  Excessive barking can be problematic for people living in apartment buildings, as well, as just inconvenient and annoying no matter where you live.  Firmly tell your dog no, as soon as it begins to bark or after one or two barks if you want them to learn that giving a warning is okay.  Use a firm, even tone, which is different from when you are angry.  If the puppy persists, use a slightly, sharper tone.  Never laugh, smile, or otherwise encourage the behavior.  Jumping should also be discouraged as it could lead to accidents such as knocking over a small child, dirtying or damaging clothes, and making other people uncomfortable.  If your puppy jumps, tell him, “No jumping,” and push him gently back down to a sitting position.  Then tell him, “Good dog,” for sitting.  Lift your hand.  If the puppy jumps again, repeat the process until he stays for a reasonable amount of time or loses interest.

Just following these few suggestions will get you off to a great start with your puppy and will keep undesirable behaviors to a minimum.  From here you can decide on other tricks such as sit, shake, jump, and so on that might be fun for your puppy to learn.  Just remember to start out short and simple.
