Why Only Toy Dogs Should Wear Sweaters

Jan 19

You’re not really going to put that sweater on your pit bull, are you? Your German shepherd doesn’t need extra clothing either, nor does your lab, your Doberman pinscher, or even your beagle. These dogs are not cold. They have a coat that protects them and they’re more suited to the outdoors than you are, so don’t try to get them to wear your clothes. It’s embarrassing to the dog and makes your neighbors think you’re a little off your rocker. Only toy dogs should wear sweaters, and even then it should be purely out of necessity, not because you want to play dress-up.

The Yorkies for sale we have here at Affordable Pup are one of the most popular toy dog breeds. As they grow and get older, they often shake and are perceived to have problems with being cold. This may not be the case. A warm sweater in winter is okay for a small dog, particularly if you’re taking him out for a walk, but don’t ignore the possibility that there could be additional health problems causing the shaking. Yorkies often suffer from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. This will also cause shaking and should be attended to immediately. Hypoglycemia can cause a dog to go into a coma.

Since they have very fine hair, Yorkies do get cold, so there’s a good chance that the temperature is the reason for the shaking. During the winter it may be advantageous to you and your dog to work on some indoor paper training for those really cold days. Unlike larger dogs, Yorkies don’t leave large piles of waste. Some pet owners even train them to use a litter box, like a cat. If you live in a climate where sub zero temperatures are common you might want to look into these possibilities. You’ll also want to invest in some warm sweaters or sweatshirts for when you do have to go outside.

Other Toy Breeds that might benefit from Warm Clothing

The Chihuahua shares many of the same health concerns of the Yorkie. They have extremely fine hair and are susceptible to hypoglycemia, so get any shaking checked out right away. They also often suffer from another condition called subluxation of the patella” which is more commonly known as “slipped stifles” or simply “loose kneecaps”.  This condition can cause shaking too and may need surgery if it’s an extreme case. Contact your vet immediately if your Chihuahua is having trouble walking.

Another example is the English bulldogs for sale we have here at Affordable Pup. The English bulldog is another breed you see wearing clothing. Be very careful if you own one of these dogs and haven’t dressed him before. The skin of an English bulldog is extremely sensitive to rough materials and the breed is highly vulnerable to heatstroke. Their skin is very thin and will react in negative fashion to any substance or weather condition that irritates it. Do some additional research or ask your vet before you purchase or make any clothing for your English bulldog.

You’re here because we have Pom Puppies for Sale, aren’t you?

Jan 16

Have you been doing a lot of searching for Pomeranians for sale? You have finally arrived in the right place. This popular little dog is a regular at Affordable Pup, one that is in high demand because of its durability and fierce loyalty to its owners. If you’re a fan of toy dog breeds and haven’t had the pleasure of owning a Pomeranian you may want to try it. Those who adopt this breed tend to develop a loyalty of their own to it, one that makes it hard to consider any other breed the next time around.

The Pomeranian is an ancient and royal breed of dog. It’s ancient because it’s descended from the German Spitz, an Arctic work dog that has been around for centuries. It’s royal because the Pomeranian was the preferred house dog of many of Europe’s royal families in the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries. Queen Victoria owned a particularly small version of the Pomeranian during her reign and is considered the person primarily responsible for the downsizing of the breed. The overall size shrunk by 50% during her reign alone, giving us the toy dog version of today.

Great things do come in small packages, as anyone who has adopted one of our Pom puppies for sale can attest. A young Pomeranian can easily fit in the palm of an adult’s hand. Children find them to be absolutely captivating, and they don’t have to grow much to be able to handle all the rough house playing a child likes to do with their dog. As toy dog breeds go, the Pomeranian is one of the toughest. It also comes with the fewest number of potential health problems. The genetic make-up of the dog and its ancestry with the Spitz make it a healthy choice that will live a long time.

Because of its durability, the Pomeranian is often selected as a candidate for cross breeding. You’ll notice a section here for Malti Poms. The Malltese is also an ancient breed, with ancestry confirmed as far back as 500 BC, making this cross a joining of two of the strongest bloodlines in canine history. If you’re looking for a Malti Pom puppy you’ll need to move fast. They don’t seem to last more than a day or two on our site before someone adopts them. They are that much in demand.

A Pet Lovers Guide to Buying Yorkie Puppies

Jan 12

If you’re looking at Yorkie puppies for sale for the first time, there are a few characteristics of the Yorkie breed you should familiarize yourself with. To start out with, Yorkies change coat colors as they get older, so if you’re buying a puppy for its coloring be aware that they won’t look like that when they grow up. Much like a human baby who’s born blond, there’s no guarantee that the hair color is going to stay the same. With a Yorkie, there may also be a color mix if they’re bloodline isn’t pure. There are certain colors that are considered “registered” Yorkie colors.

Most Yorkie puppies are born with a black and tan coat, similar to what you’ll see on a miniature Rottweiler. It takes up to three years for them to grow into their true colors, which will generally resemble their parents. The other combination you’ll see is what is known as “Blue and Gold”, a lighter version of the black and tan. These two combinations are considered the “official” colors of the Yorkie. Ask your breeder how much he knows about your puppy’s bloodline. You should be able to predict the colors your dog will be when he or she grows to maturity.

You get what you pay for. Yorkie puppies for sale tend to be more expensive when their lineage and family history of illness can be accurately traced. You will most likely pay less at a pet store for a Yorkie pup, but your selection will most likely be a dog born in a puppy mill, where lineage is not closely watched. These illegal breeding farms throw all the dogs together in what are often appalling conditions and breed them as fast as possible. Profit, not love of the animals, is their primary motive.

A registered breeder will have checked the DNA and history of illness with your Yorkie pup’s family. It’s important to have this history available to you. Yorkies generally live sixteen to eighteen years, with many hitting twenty or more, but illnesses and medical conditions present in their bloodline can cause those life spans to be shortened. Paying a little more for your Yorkie puppy will ensure you get more time to spend with an animal who will become an inseparable companion. They are that lovable.

Females are typically more expensive than males. If you’re buying a female with the intent to breed her at some point, make sure you get an accurate family history in the very beginning. When the time comes to do the breeding, it is best to select a smaller male if you want to see a healthy and uneventful birthing process. Check the papers on the male also, of course, and please do not breed for profit. Your Yorkie puppy should be a member of your family, receiving all the same love and attention you give to your children. You wouldn’t breed your children for money, would you? Those of us who are opposed to puppy mills feel that they are doing exactly that.

You’ve come to the right place to find Yorkie puppies for sale Ohio

Jan 09

The Yorkie puppies for sale Ohio breeders have provided for us are some of the most lovable and affectionate dogs you will find anywhere. We’ve been brokering successful adoptions of these wonderful animals for quite some time now and we just wanted to share some of the feedback we’ve received from families that have been lucky enough to bring a Yorkie into their home. We can’t share specific names, because our client list is confidential, but we do want to tell some of their stories.

One woman wrote to us about the impact of her choice of a Yorkie puppy for her aging mother. Apparently Mom was in an assisted living facility and had pretty much settled into deterioration mode. Her husband had passed a few years earlier and she was just waiting to follow him at any time. Concerned, her daughter came to us and adopted a Yorkie puppy, which she promptly gave to her Mom. She started by just asking her to “watch” the dog for a week while her and her husband took care of some renovations.

You probably can guess the rest of the story. Caring for a small furry friend, one that showed her unconditional love and a constant desire to spend time with her, snapped Mom out of her funk. She is still around today, doing much better, even smiling and laughing most of the time. Her daughter made a difference in her life because she heard we had Yorkies for sale and felt that a puppy would have an impact on her mother’s life. It did. That Yorkie prolonged her life and brought joy back into it.

Our second story is one of triumph and heroism. Whenever you see television depictions of canine heroes they’re always larger dogs. Lassie was a Collie. Rin Tin Tin was a German shepherd. Beethoven was a St. Bernard. Have you ever seen a Yorkie hero on TV? We received a letter from one parent telling us how her Yorkie saved her son’s life. He had climbed a tree he should not have been in and got stuck. Darkness was just hours away and a storm was coming. How did he get down? His Yorkie ran home and brought back help. Lassie couldn’t have done any better.

The Yorkshire terrier puppies for sale here may be small in stature but they have big hearts and are fearless when it comes to protecting their owners. You may have laughed in the past when you’ve seen a small dog like a Yorkie square off against a larger animal or hostile human. You think it’s cute. The dog is dead serious. They love and protect their owners more than anything else on earth, even at the risk of their own safety and well being. That’s what you get when you adopt a Yorkie.

Toy Dog Breeds may be small, but they are not toys

Jan 05

Have your friends made fun of you for looking at Yorkie puppies for sale? We have heard them called every name in the book; apartment dogs, sissy dogs, pocket sized dogs and lap dogs. None of these titles are really fair, especially the title given to them by the American Kennel Club, the toy dogs. These small packages of dynamite are perfect for those people who choose to stay single and for the elderly. They don’t eat you out of house and home and generally they don’t make much noise and most are well behaved.

To compensate for their size; owners have given their toy dog breeds brave and fierce names. The best behaved Pomeranian I was ever acquainted with had been given the name of ‘Trouble’. Its owner wanted nothing to do with names like ‘Tiny’ or ‘Tinkerbelle’ so Trouble was her next choice. There was a neighborhood Chihuahua for sale named ‘Charger’ and a Maltese called ‘Ivan the Terrible’, but the most contradictory name was given to the gentlest of all toy breeds, a Yorkie, who was referred to as ‘Killer’.

Historically the toy dog breeds were favored by the rich. Through selective breeding by the royalty of the world these little bundles of energy keep their puppy like appearance and demeanor most of their lives. No dog owner will deny that when they first brought their pet home as a puppy these animals provided unending entertainment and affection. These owners still loved their dogs as they grew however, many owners look back lovingly on these special times. The toy dog breeds never really lose the puppy playfulness and energy and for most owners that creates an allure for the smaller breeds.

Somewhere in history the title ‘toy’ was given these dogs and many in the K-9 world see that as a major blunder. Toy, rather than referring to its size has given these smaller breeds a treatment they don’t deserve. They are not toys and shouldn’t be treated as such. Because of their size they depend on their owners for everything. They aren’t like the larger breeds that can grab food off the table and muscle their way into the front seat of the car. Many parents mistakenly will bring home a toy breed expecting their young children to play with it as a toy. Playing dress-up is one thing but, tossing a Yorkie up and down and treating it like a rag doll is not what these animals were bred for.

As small as these dogs are they have big hearts. They protect their owners without hesitation and are loyal to a fault. Anyone who is thinking about a smaller dog should welcome the chance to have a puppy for years to come. Their expressions of curiosity and continuous affection are an enormous draw for these breeds. The demand for the smaller breeds grows daily. If you’re looking at this site right now you either have a toy dog in your home or are contemplating getting one. Check out our selection. We guarantee you’ll fall in love at first sight.

There’s something special about the Teacup Maltese Puppies for Sale Here

Jan 02

The Maltese is one of the oldest recognized breeds of dog in the world. Literature and pictorial references to them can be found going as far back as 500 BC in the annals of ancient Greece and Rome. That, in and of itself, makes them special, as they have made it through the centuries intact, unlike many other breeds that have lost their unique identity or become extinct. The teacup Maltese puppies for sale here share that prestigious lineage. They also offer their owners unconditional love and loyalty.

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while you know that we talk a lot about the histories of the various breeds we put up for adoption. It’s important to know not only what your dog’s present situation is, but also their past history. This can tell you if you should expect certain physical limitations or genetic defects, give you insight into how to take care of your dog, and in the case of the Maltese provide you understanding into the resilience of the breed. This small, lovable dog is present in large numbers in the Mediterranean, Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. That’s impressive.

Of all the dogs we have up for adoption here, the Maltese and cross breeds with the Maltese are in the most demand. If you go to our Maltese for sale page you may find it at certain times to be empty. Have no fear. Our inventory changes daily and we usually have Malti Poms and Malti Poos if we don’t have pure breeds. You can wait or you can use our webcam feature to meet one of our other puppies. You may just fall in love and revise your decision to only buy pure bred dogs.

People often prefer smaller dogs because of their living situation. If you reside in an apartment or development, you may not have the luxury of open space for a large dog to run in. A teacup puppy is perfectly happy scampering across the floor of your apartment and can be trained to use paper or even a cat box when it needs to relieve itself. That cuts down on the walking, a definite bonus for seniors. If you have children, teacup puppies make wonderful companions that won’t play rough like larger dogs do.

Check out our selection of Maltese puppies. While you’re at it, look through the sections for Malti Poos, Malti Shihs, and Malti Pom puppies for sale Pennsylvania breeders have supplied us with. The canine companion that will change your life is here within these pages. You don’t have to go anywhere else to find a perfect match. Take your time, use our webcam feature, and come back tomorrow if you don’t find what you’re looking for today. Our selection changes fast because our puppies get adopted quickly.

Chocolate Havanese Puppies can be Hard to Find

Dec 29

The Havanese has a long and rich history, like most of the dogs in the Bichon family, . Also known as the Cuban Silk Dog, the Havanese descended from the Bichon Tenerife, which is now extinct, and was brought to the Canary Islands and Cuba by the Spaniards during early colonization periods. It gained a foothold on the islands, but didn’t develop a following in the United States until the 1970’s. In fact, immediately following the Cuban revolution, the US breeding pool for the Havanese was a mere 11 dogs.

That’s a low number to start out with, one that didn’t bode well for the future of the breed in the United States, but the Havanese proved to be resilient. It’s one of the fastest growing breeds in this country today, yet chocolate Havanese puppies can still be hard to find. Why? The original Havanese dogs in Cuba were believed to be all white. Pure bred members of the breed today can range in color and each have the distinguishing feature of a black nose and black pigment around the eyes, all save the chocolate Havanese, which has dark brown pigment on the nose.

The disparity in the coloring makes this particular version of the Havanese more popular, and harder to find, but have no fear, we have chocolate Havanese puppies for sale here. If you’ve been searching for some time, you can relax now. Take some time and browse through our selection. Use our webcam feature to set up an interview, view the pictures of chocolate Havanese pups to familiarize yourself with the breed, and email or call us if you have any questions. These dogs make wonderful companions and we want you to be as knowledgeable about them as possible before you adopt.

As a source for toy dog adoption, we here at Affordable Pup try to publish the history of each of our breeds so you can better understand how to care for them. The Havanese originated in the Western Mediterranean and evolved in Cuba and the Canary Islands, all tropical locations. Its coat is thin and designed to protect it from sun and heat, not to keep it warm in winter. If you own a Havanese and plan on taking it outside when the temperatures dip below freezing, dress it up in a sweater for best results.

If you don’t happen to find a Havanese that you feel is a match for you, check out some of our Yorkie puppies for sale. They are a more common breed and every bit as lovable as their cousins from Cuba. They tend to be a bit more energetic though, so be prepared to play with them, a lot. Yorkies are wonderful companions for children and senior adults. They’re easy to take care of and often live more than fifteen years.
