The French Bulldog: AKA Bouledogue Francais and Frenchie

Jun 07

French Bulldogs originated from the English Bulldog.  Lace makers in Nottingham, England bred for small sized English Bulldogs.  Eventually, during the Industrial Revolution, some of these lace makers were displaced to France, where they brought their “toy-sized” or “miniature” Bulldogs.  Further breeding and crosses with terriers and Pugs have resulted in today’s French Bulldog:  a smaller, more active version of the English Bulldog.

French Bulldogs look very similar to English Bulldogs, with short, stocky, muscular bodies, and a short, wrinkled face.  However, there are a few distinct differences.  Most notably, they are considerably smaller in weight.  An adult French Bulldog stands at about 12 inches, but weighs between 19-28 pounds.  Of note, a French Bulldog over 28 pounds is a disqualification in the show ring.  Aside from their smaller size, French Bulldog’s have upright, bat-like, ears instead of the folded down ears of both English Bulldogs and Pugs.  French Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania come in brindle, fawn, white, and brindle and white.  French Bulldogs are also more active than their distant cousins.  According the AKC, French Bulldogs are described as being, “a clown in the cloak of a philosopher.”

Despite their higher activity levels, French Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio, do not require a heavy exercise schedule.  A daily walk will suffice.  As such they make great pets for smaller houses and apartments.  As companion animals they are very affectionate with their owners and make a great family pet, as they do very well with children.  They get along with other animals quite well if the proper procedures are followed for getting the animals acquainted.

Just like Pugs and English Bulldogs, with their scrunched faces and shorter airway passages, French Bulldogs do not do well in high heat or extreme cold due to their short, thin coats.  They are very much indoor only dogs.  This is usually fine with them as they much prefer being a lap dog to being a more active, sporting dog.  However, they can be prone to weight problems if allowed to over eat without sufficient extra exercise to burn off the excess calories.

French Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio are affectionate and lively with comical personalities.  Frenchies tend to be quiet dogs who are not prone to yapping or excessive barking.  They tend to be easy to take care of with their low exercise requirements and short, thin easy to groom coats. The English Bulldog: Fighting Dog to Companion Dog

Jun 04

The English Bulldog has a long history with humans.  The first known references are from 1500 A.D. with an original spelling of “Bondogge” or “Bolddogge.”  The modern name of “bulldog” was applied after it became popular to use these dogs for bull baiting.  After the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835 ended bull baiting in England, the English Bulldog was cross bred with Pugs, which led to the shorter, wider appearance that we see today.  Selective breeding has also reduced the ferocity of the breed that had been necessary as a fighting animal.

Today, English Bulldogs are considered excellent family pets as they are gentle and loving with children and adoring of people, in general.  English Bulldogs are in the Mastiff family. English Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania can be brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow, or piebald.  Most are white and another color, you can discover more here.  English Bulldogs have distinctive short, stocky (actually quite broad) shoulders, and large heads with wrinkled faces.  They commonly have an under bite, as well.  Another distinctive feature is that there is a particular wrinkle that crosses over the top of the nose, often referred to as a “rope.”  These folds of skin are often quite pronounced and require regular cleaning to avoid infections.   English Bulldogs stand between 12-16 inches and have an adult weight of 45 to 55 pounds, with those bred in the United States tending towards the lower weight scale.

Despite their strong, muscular build and fierce faces, English Bulldog puppies for sale in Ohio and Pennsylvania will grow up to be gentle, loving, and affectionate.   While they are not prone to excessive barking, they will bark when they feel it is necessary and make good watchdogs.  Due to their appearance and reputation for being stubborn or “bull-headed” they are great for scaring off intruders.

English Bulldog puppies for sale in Pennsylvania and Ohio make great pets for small houses and apartments, as they need very little exercise.  Even when they have access to a large yard, they are often just as happy lying next to their owner or in a lap instead of chasing a ball.  This low energy does mean that an owner needs to take care that the puppy doesn’t over eat, as their low exercise will not burn off the calories, making them prone to being overweight.  They also do better indoors as they do not tolerate heat well because of their short faces (causing less effective panting) and do not tolerate the cold well either because of their thin, short coats of hair.  However, their lack of long, thick hair also means that they require less frequent grooming.

How about a real life Teddy Bear?

Apr 13

For part two of our deciding on a puppy series, we are talking about a new “designer” breed called Teddy Bear puppies.  We look forward to sharing this adorable dog with you.

Teddy Bear puppies are not a strictly purebred breed, but are a hybrid of two or three purebred breeds, specifically a Shih Tzu, Toy Poodle, and Bichon Frise. While any combination can be called a Teddy Bear, they do have official names.  A cross between a Shih Tzu and a Toy Poodle is a Shih Poo, a Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle cross is a Poochon, and a Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu mix is a Zuchon.  The most commonly bred type is the Zuchon.

Teddy Bear puppies for sale in Ohio are bred to resemble an adorable, stuffed teddy bear.  Even as adults most Teddy Bear’s will still look just like an adorable playful puppy.  They are small and fluffy with flat faces.  Their adult size is about 12 inches tall and they are about 5-8 lbs.  Similarly to most small dogs, they seem to have an abundance of energy; however, teddy bear dogs tend to have small bursts of energy followed by longer rest periods.  While regular exercise is recommended for all dogs, beware of going on too long of a walk with your Teddy Bear puppy.  Luckily, if your Teddy Bear gets worn out, they are small and light enough to be easily carried home.

Teddy Bear puppies for sale in Ohio tend to have fur that is more like hair than fur, meaning that they not only shed significantly less than most dogs; they also produce less dander.  Having less dander makes them ideal for people with allergies.  Their hair can be prone to matting and tangling, much like a child’s hair, but this is easily overcome with regular grooming from brushing or hair trims.

Many Teddy Bear puppy owners consider them to be the ideal small companion dog.  There are many benefits to considering Teddy Bear puppies for sale in Ohio.  Unlike many other small dog breeds, Teddy Bear puppies are less prone to temperament issues due to an independent attitude and are more eager to please.  They are known to be intelligent and mild-mannered, making them a good choice for a home with children.  They are also less prone to barking, but will, likely, still need some firm training in this area.

As with any other dog breed, Teddy Bear puppies for sale in Ohio need lots of love, attention, and firm, regular training from their owners.  With sufficient training and socialization, owning a Teddy Bear puppy can provide you with years of enjoyment, companionship, and compliments from friends and strangers.

Foxy Pomeranians Rock!

Apr 10

For post three of our deciding on a puppy series, we will be showcasing the lively Pomeranian, sometimes also affectionately called a PomPom or even more simply a Pom.  We hope you enjoy learning about Pomeranian puppies for sale in Ohio.

The Pomeranian breed comes from the European region of Pomerania, which is in present day Germany and Poland.  They are in the Spitz family and were originally much larger, reaching 30 lbs.  They were used as sheep herding dogs.  Queen Victoria acquired one on a trip to Italy, which greatly increased their popularity.  Unlike many purebred breeds, the Pomeranian puppies for sale in Ohio come in a wide variety of colors, although, reds or oranges are the most popular colors.  Pomeranians are known for their tiny, fox like faces surrounded by puffy hair.  They also have an adorable, fluffy curled tail.  Pomeranians have a unique thick double coat, which requires frequent brushing.  The undercoat will shed or “blow” twice a year, so you’ll need to be prepared for fuzzy little tumbleweeds around your house.    Because they have so much hair they may not be a good choice for someone prone to allergies.

Pomeranian puppies are known for their “cocky” attitudes and proud, lively dispositions.  Pomeranians are very intelligent and eager to learn.  Pomeranians are one of the most independent of the Toy dog breeds.  They require very firm, consistent training from a young age to insure that they do not develop any negative habits, such as excessive barking.  They are very loyal to their owners and can be very protective.  They will also need to be trained early to spend time alone to avoid any separation anxiety.

Pomeranians are particularly endearing because of their intelligence and agility, which makes them able to learn interesting tricks.  Pomeranians are popular as circus show trick dogs, able to do impressive jumps, flips, and spins.  Being highly energetic dogs, Pomeranian puppies for sale in Ohio need lots of play time, but they need very little time on long walks.  Keep in mind that regular exercise is suggested for all dogs to ensure they do not become overweight.

The Noble and Proud Maltese

Mar 30

We hope you’ve been enjoying learning about our puppies.  If you’re new to the blog, welcome and be sure to check our previous postings for information on other puppy breeds.  For post five we will be presenting the Maltese.

Originally known as “Ye ancient dogge of Malta,” Maltese have been a favored companion dog among the aristocracy and royalty around the world for hundreds of years.  The most ancient record of a Maltese is from a Greek artifact dated around 500 B.C.  Members of the Toy classification, Maltese puppies for sale in Ohio have an adult height of 8-10 inches and weigh between 4-6 lbs. Maltese are known for their very distinctive appearance.  They are small dogs with very long, pure white hair, a black button nose, and dark eyes.

Maltese puppies are spirited, lively, and playful.  Maltese puppies for sale in Ohio make an ideal companion dog as they are graceful and lovable.  Their long, pure white hair makes them stand out from other small dogs.  Since they have no undercoat, they shed very little are often considered hypoallergenic dogs, ideal for people who usually have an allergy to dogs.  All that gorgeous white hair does require a lot of grooming to keep it from matting and tangling.  For this reason many people keep their hair trimmed to a more manageable length.  The most popular cut is called a “puppy cut,” as the cut resembles how their hair looks when they are puppies.  For those who wish to keep the hair long or longish, many will put the hair on the top of the head in a top knot, pony tail, or two pig-tails to keep it out of their eyes.   Daily facial cleaning is also needed to prevent “tear staining” around the eyes.  Some of the staining can be limited through diet.

While Maltese need firm, consistent training to prevent small dog syndrome and undesirable tendencies, such as excessive barking or biting, they are, generally, very loveable, affectionate, and cuddly dogs.  Maltese puppies for sale in Ohio are energetic and fun loving.  They require minimal exercise making them ideal for apartments and small homes with no large yard space.  Regular exercise is recommended to ensure quality health for any dog, and a Maltese would enjoy a short daily walk to burn off excess energy.

Ay, Chihuahua!

Mar 23

For our sixth featured dog, we are visiting Mexico and the Chihuahua.

Hailing from Mexico and named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where early records of them have been found, the Chihuahua is a tiny dog with a big iconic status.  They are often referred to as the “Taco Bell dog “ in pop culture thanks to a series of commercials produced by Taco Bell featuring an adorable Chihuahua and the catch phrase, “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”  They also made the idea of carrying a Toy companion dog around in a large purse popular because of images from the movie “Legally Blonde” with Reese Whitherspoon and “Bruiser” and from images of Paris Hilton with her Chihuahua, “Tinkerbell.”

As the tiniest dog breed in the world, Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio will grow up to be no more than 6-9 inches tall and weighing between 2-6 lbs.  Chihuahua’s can be both short-haired and long-haired and neither type sheds a lot or requires a lot of grooming.  They also come in a variety of colors and color combinations.  Aside from their diminutive stature, Chihuahua’s are known for their large ears and fierce faces.  Chihuahua’s are often described as having either Apple or Deer heads, meaning that the former type has short noses and rounded heads, while the latter has longer noses and a more elongated head.

Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio are alert dogs with terrier-like qualities.  Chihuahua’s can be very loyal, but tend to bond closely to one particular member of a household and are not recommended for households with very small children due to aggressive tendencies that make them prone to biting.  They can do very well in households with older, more patient children, though.

Chihuahua’s are the only dogs to be born with an incomplete skull and a soft spot called a moleras, just like human babies.  This soft spot will disappear with age, but care should be taken that they don’t suffer head injuries during the first 6 months of life.  Make sure your vet can tell the difference between a soft spot and a serious medical condition called hydrocephalus.  Chihuahua’s often tremble, but this is due to stress, excitement, or cold and is not a medical concern.  Chihuahua’s don’t deal well with the cold as they are thin haired and small with little fat reserves unless grossly overweight.  They can benefit from having doggie sweaters and coats, if you live in a cold climate.  They also enjoy having a snug den and will burrow inside or under blankets, pillows, and clothes hampers.

Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio are active, energetic, and intelligent dogs who do well with apartment living and small homes.  They do best with single owners, but some can adjust well to larger families if socialized at a young age.
