Aside from food, treats, and related items such as food and water bowls, there are a few other items you may want to consider having for your new puppy, such as a crate, dog bed, toys, leash, and collar.
Crates are a great item for your puppy as it gives him, or her, a special place all their own. In the wild, dogs usually find “dens” to sleep in, like caves or other sheltered areas. By having a den, your puppy will feel more secure. In addition, there may be times when it’s preferable to have your puppy confined, when you’re away from home, asleep, or during times of high activity such as a party or when workmen are going in and out of the house.
Whether or not you have a crate, another way to designate a special place for your new puppy is with a dog bed. There are a wide variety of options for dog beds. Some are specially designed cushions that are meant for crates. Others are designed more like cushions or pillows with a covering that is easy to remove and wash. Another option is one that has a back and sides almost like a cuddly chair to snuggle into. Having a dog bed, even if it’s a pile of blankets, will give your puppy a specific area of his own in, say, your bedroom, so he can sleep with you without sleeping in your bed, too.
Just like a human child, puppies love to play and love to chew on things. It’s a good idea to provide special toys and “chewies” just for her, before she makes her own selection, which could range from a table leg to the newspaper to your favorite slippers. When selecting puppy toys, keep in mind Just like a human child, puppies love to play and love to chew on things. It’s a good idea to provide special toys and “chewies” just for her, before she makes her own selection, which could range from a table leg to the newspaper to your favorite slippers. When selecting puppy toys, keep in mind our puppy’s breed and size. You’ll want toys that are of the right size, not too big, but not so small that it’s a choking hazard. You may want to consider toys that allow you to place treats inside to encourage your puppy to gnaw on it. Think carefully before purchasing squeaker toys. You’re puppy will likely love it, but will you be able to handle the squeaking sound? Specially designed dog balls are a great option as they give your puppy something to chase.
Finally, you should have a leash and collar, even if you don’t plan to regularly use them. A collar allows you to affix an ID tag in case your puppy should ever become lost. Also, many cities have leash laws, so it’s best to have one on hand should the need for it ever arise.
