The Morkie isn’t a Hybrid to those who Love Them
Nov 07

For anyone who has ever loved a Morkie, “hybrid” is a word that just isn’t in our vocabulary. In fact, with all the unconditional love, companionship and joy a Morkie brings to the lives of so many, there simply aren’t enough positive words to describe our beloved friends. Take the time to read a little bit about the wonderful this wonderful cousin to both the Yorkies for sale and Maltese for sale we have here at Affordable Pups. If you find that you’re suddenly in the market for a friend, a Morkie may just be the perfect choice.
Physical Description
The Morkie, formerly called the Yorktese, is a cross between the Maltese and the Yorkshire terrier. Both parents are relatively small and as a result, the typical Morkie weighs in somewhere between 4 to 9 pounds and is usually only 6 to 10 inches tall. A very small dog indeed, the Morkie needs additional care so as not to fall off furniture or get stepped on by accident.
Traditionally black, tan or sable, the Morkie has been known to exhibit brighter colors like apricot or even silver gray. While regular grooming will ensure the coat stays long, flowing and soft, the Morkie typically sheds very little and is low maintenance. As for the ears, they may be small, erect and pointed like the Yorkie or dropped by the side, characteristic of the Maltese. Some people choose to dock the tail, while others let it remain long and flowing like the Maltese.
Personality Traits
It’s difficult to properly explain the loving nature of the Morkie. They prefer to sit on your lap over chasing birds or even eating. In fact, it’s almost impossible to coax them off your lap once they’ve nestled in comfortably. Actually, they’re insulted if they can’t sleep by your side in bed and will quickly designate their own “spot” near the pillows.
With a temperament that is always calm, cool and collected, the Morkie is intensely social, making a great companion for older children and senior citizens as well. However, they are fairly independent, and can keep themselves happy and entertained for long periods of time as long as you are within earshot. The bond that develops between a Morkie and his owner is intense. In fact, many Morkies will feel ignored and become quite sad if left alone too long. Perfect for a small apartment and limited outdoor time, the Morkie is content to spend the majority of its time indoors and is well suited for this environment.
A Hybrid Only in Name
Sometimes referred to as the Malkie or the Malki, the Morkie is not a purebred and therefore is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, do we really care? No we do not because our love for our dog extends much further than a piece of paper. While there is nothing wrong with having certification, there has never been a case where a Morkie owner has regretted not having them.
As a friend and a companion, the Morkie is always dependable and ready to show affection. An easy dog to train, keep happy and comfortable, the Morkie makes a terrific pet for families as well as older people living alone. Experience the unconditional love of a Morkie and understand why we believe wholeheartedly that our Morkie is a hybrid in name only and will always be the best choice.
