Ay, Chihuahua!

Mar 23

For our sixth featured dog, we are visiting Mexico and the Chihuahua.

Hailing from Mexico and named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where early records of them have been found, the Chihuahua is a tiny dog with a big iconic status.  They are often referred to as the “Taco Bell dog “ in pop culture thanks to a series of commercials produced by Taco Bell featuring an adorable Chihuahua and the catch phrase, “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”  They also made the idea of carrying a Toy companion dog around in a large purse popular because of images from the movie “Legally Blonde” with Reese Whitherspoon and “Bruiser” and from images of Paris Hilton with her Chihuahua, “Tinkerbell.”

As the tiniest dog breed in the world, Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio will grow up to be no more than 6-9 inches tall and weighing between 2-6 lbs.  Chihuahua’s can be both short-haired and long-haired and neither type sheds a lot or requires a lot of grooming.  They also come in a variety of colors and color combinations.  Aside from their diminutive stature, Chihuahua’s are known for their large ears and fierce faces.  Chihuahua’s are often described as having either Apple or Deer heads, meaning that the former type has short noses and rounded heads, while the latter has longer noses and a more elongated head.

Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio are alert dogs with terrier-like qualities.  Chihuahua’s can be very loyal, but tend to bond closely to one particular member of a household and are not recommended for households with very small children due to aggressive tendencies that make them prone to biting.  They can do very well in households with older, more patient children, though.

Chihuahua’s are the only dogs to be born with an incomplete skull and a soft spot called a moleras, just like human babies.  This soft spot will disappear with age, but care should be taken that they don’t suffer head injuries during the first 6 months of life.  Make sure your vet can tell the difference between a soft spot and a serious medical condition called hydrocephalus.  Chihuahua’s often tremble, but this is due to stress, excitement, or cold and is not a medical concern.  Chihuahua’s don’t deal well with the cold as they are thin haired and small with little fat reserves unless grossly overweight.  They can benefit from having doggie sweaters and coats, if you live in a cold climate.  They also enjoy having a snug den and will burrow inside or under blankets, pillows, and clothes hampers.

Chihuahua puppies for sale in Ohio are active, energetic, and intelligent dogs who do well with apartment living and small homes.  They do best with single owners, but some can adjust well to larger families if socialized at a young age.

Exploring the Great Outdoors with your Puppy

Mar 20

It’s spring! Can you think of anything more enjoyable to do this time of year than spending some quality outdoor time with your puppy? Imagine the fond memories you can create by adopting one of the teacup Maltese puppies for sale that we have for you here at Affordable Pup, and then taking that adorable puppy out for a romp on the beach or in a wide open field somewhere. Maybe you have a backyard and maybe you don’t; this time of year you’ll want to find some open space to play.

Exercise is a key component in the long term health of your dog, no matter what breed it happens to be. With teacup puppies, since later in life they often become sedentary and prefer to stay indoors, it’s important to get them as much exercise as possible while they are young. You’ll also want to capture those moments when they learn to use their legs, discover their tail, and chase after a butterfly or bug for the very first time. Is there anything cuter than a puppy’s antics in those early days?

The frolicking good times aren’t limited to Maltese. The pet lovers who adopt the Yorkies for sale Ohio breeders provide send us stories all the time about special moments they have with their pups in the great outdoors. Yorkies love to be outside, especially if they have room to run. They also make great car dogs, so it’s no problem to take them a few miles away if there’s a great park or ocean venue you’d rather spend time in. They’re content as long as they’re by your side, so run for a while and then relax for a bit. A Yorkie will lie down right next to you and enjoy the moment.

Just like with humans, a puppy should be taken to the vet before you put it through a strenuous exercise routine. In cases of outdoor exercise, you’ll want to make sure your puppy has all its shots and vaccinations and has been checked for any genetic health defects that are common to its specific breed. Yorkies and other teacup puppies often suffer from luxating patellas or asthmatic conditions. Make sure you have your pup checked for both before you take it out for a romp.

Want to see a dog defy gravity? Adopt one of the English bulldogs for sale we have here at Affordable Pup and take it out for an outdoor romp. They may look short and slow, but they have some serious rise when they jump after something and they can really get up and go in an open field. We’re certain if you check the English bulldog section right now, there’s a puppy there you will fall in love with. Adopt her and take her out to play. You’ll both get a health benefit from it and you’ll build a bond that will last a lifetime.

Read the rest of this post and we’re certain you’ll agree.

  1. Lap Dogs: When was the last time you saw a German shepherd jump up on its owner’s lap? There are some larger dogs that like to cuddle, but when it comes to human comfort there’s no better lap companion than a teacup puppy. They take up very little space and even when they grow they’re a pleasure to have on top of you. Teacup owners look forward to coming home every day and having one of the adorable Yorkies, Morkies, or Pomeranians for sale we have here jump up on their lap.
  2. Car Dogs: The Yorkie puppies for sale Pennsylvania pet owners have adopted write to us often about the shear joy their dogs feel when they get a chance to ride in the car. You need to take some precautions, of course. Make sure the windows aren’t too wide open. Your dog might jump after a squirrel or cat crossing the road. Many dog owners will actually take their dogs in a crate and point the gate at an open window so the pup can get the full breeze effect. Which ever you choose, just make sure your dog gets a ride once in a while. The time you spend together in the car will be special.
  3. Puppy Playmates: Do you have children or other pets? Tea cup puppies make the best playmates for both. They get along great with other dogs and cats and are never a risk to harm your children in any way. Since they typically live longer, you can expect your kids to grow up with them, never having to deal with the tragedy of losing a pet before they get into their teenage years. Some live well into college days, becoming a permanent fixture in the home until the kids move away.

Can you think of a few more reasons why teacup pups are a good choice for you? Looking for something a little different? Try adopting one of the English bulldogs for sale that we have available today. You could also go with a mixed breed, like our Yorkie Poo or Cavachon puppies for sale. Who’s Walking Who? Training your Teacup Puppy

Mar 09

We try to make sure that we’re always open to field inquiries about pet adoption and care whenever possible and we hear an awful lot from those who adopt our puppies. The most common questions we get about the Yorkie puppies for sale in Ohio pet owners are looking for have to do with training and discipline. Those who have cared for Yorkies in the past know that they are very affectionate and loyal dogs that will rarely leave your side. They are, however, extremely playful and can bolt when you’re out walking them. Training prevents some of that. A good leash works even better. Investing in both is recommended if you’re going to adopt a Yorkie or any other dog.

The most important factor in training your dog is making sure that he or she knows what the word “no” means. It’s very easy to get caught up in lavishing affection on that cute and cuddly fur ball, but keep in mind that teaching an animal to obey commands is beneficial to the animal as well as the owner. Once you start letting them get away with little things here and there it will be impossible to train them later on, or at the very least very difficult. Do you really want to put yourself through that?

The need for training doesn’t just apply to Yorkies either. Let’s say you come to our website and decide to adopt one of the teacup Maltese puppies for sale that you see here so often. They are perhaps the most adorable animal there is, particularly when they’re very young like that, so of course you want to baby them. Your hold them, pet them, and let them get away with little things like chewing up household items and going after people food. Do you plan on allowing that forever? Stop it now.

The behaviors that are cute and seemingly harmless today will become an annoyance in the future. We encourage you to love and show affection for your teacup puppy at all times, but make sure that your dog knows right from wrong. It’s fairly easy to do, doesn’t require any kind of physical abuse, and will strengthen the relationship the two of you have with each other. A dog is mans best friend, but man is the master in the relationship. You can never forget that or the puppy will start running your house.

Is a Yorkie or Maltese going to drag you down the street when you have them on a leash? That’s not likely to happen. Some of the English bulldogs for sale that we have here might be capable of that, but even they will come to heel if you train them properly. Start the process the moment you get them home. It’s important. The health, welfare, and happiness of both the pet and the pet owner depend on it. Now, if you could just train the kids in the same way …
